A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (Aircrew – Pilot (Any ME/ISR/RW/FJ)) to serve as a QFI and Flt Cdr on East Midlands Universities Air Squadron (EMUAS), RAF Cranwell on FTRS(LC) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of being not before 01 May 2026. 6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAFC Cranwell, the school manages a broad range of flying instruction from Elementary Flying at University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for the Air Cadet Organisation. EMUAS is one of the largest University Air Squadrons in the country. It achieves its aims through 4 key pillars of delivery. Flying, AT, Fitness and FD. As a QFI you will conduct air and ground instruction for University Air Squadron (UAS) students. In addition, you will provide continuation training and syllabus training for 7AEF, and on occasion complete AEF cadet flying including supporting the delivery of ACPS. In addition, you will conduct 22Gp directed training including, but not limited to, elementary flying training (EFT), ISR(MA) training and RPAS EFT. Furthermore, you may also be required to assist with training international students. You will be working as a member of a small team and be required to undertake a range of additional duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the squadron. As a Flt Cdr you will oversee the mentoring and development of the UAS students. In addition, you will deliver ground-based training to the UAS students. Furthermore, in addition to your duties with EMUAS, but within the terms and conditions of FTRS(LC), you will be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday 07:30 to 17:00 in the Winter and 08:00 to 18:00 in the Summer, although these hours may vary to meet specific needs and may include weekend flying and will include overnight stops away from RAF Cranwell. The squadron often works Monday evenings from its Town Head Quarters (THQ) in Nottingham, and deploys overseas to complete the wider training objectives for the UAS students throughout the year. QFI and Flt Cdr duties will include: Maintain a minimum of B1 instructional category on the Tutor aircraft and CFS Accredited Instructor status. Complete any specialist training courses required to fulfil your duties, eg Flying Authorisers/Supervisors Course, Aviation Medicine Course, Flt Safety Officer, PCMIO course and building custodian course. Complete Mandatory Training Courses as required by RAF policy which includes Human Factors & Error Management Training, Diversity & Inclusion Training, Advanced Care of the Trainee and Defence Train the Trainer Course. Complete other courses mandated by HQ 6 FTS. Lead and perform by example upholding RAF ethos and core values as well as societal values and standards. Act as an ambassador for diversity and inclusion. Support the zero tolerance policies regarding alcohol, substance abuse, harassment and bullying.
