Overview

Are you ready to take the next step in your career? Do you want to do meaningful work that improves quality of life? At Tetra Tech, we work with high‑performing teams who are passionate about using their expertise to find solutions to complex problems in water, environment, infrastructure, resource management, energy, and international development.

We operate a highly successful groundwater business within our geo‑environmental team of approximately 100 professionals. We manage several high‑profile groundwater frameworks with water utility companies and contracts across the UK and Ireland, including the GeoEnergy NI – Geothermal Demonstrator, Northern Irish Private Water Supply Framework, Northern Ireland Water Consultancy Framework and Environment Agency National Borehole Decommissioning Project. With recent success in securing long‑term groundwater resource evaluation and implementation projects, we have a unique opportunity for an ambitious hydrogeologist to support several key client accounts. This consultant or senior position, at either Consultant or Senior Hydrogeologist grade (depending on experience), focuses on the technical delivery, management, growth and development of our groundwater services.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, confident, self‑motivated, and possess strong technical and commercial skills with excellent verbal and written communication. If you have an established career in groundwater consultancy, especially in groundwater resource development, you will find an exciting chance to further develop project management and leadership skills in a fast‑growing, dynamic consultancy environment.

This role involves providing professional advice on the feasibility, investigation, testing, procurement, and implementation of new private and public supplies. We prefer candidates with proven experience as a groundwater professional, ideally in groundwater resource exploitation in the UK and Ireland. The role requires a sound technical understanding of UK and Northern Irish groundwater abstraction regulatory and licensing regimes, and experience tendering and managing projects valued at £100k+.

You will be based out of our Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Belfast or Wexford office, with opportunities to work on hydrogeological projects across Great Britain and Ireland, and internationally.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

* Complete initial desk studies to inform groundwater abstraction locations, assess water demand, identify potential well sites, and evaluate yield, hydraulic efficiency and water quality.
* Coordinate and supervise field reconnaissance to fill gaps identified in the desk study.
* Carry out audits of existing wells or specify and supervise drilling of trial wells; specify and supervise pumping tests to verify yield and hydraulic efficiency of trial and production wells.
* Specify and supervise sampling and testing (microbial and chemical) to verify water quality from trial and production wells.
* Assess potential environmental impacts of proposed groundwater abstraction and assist in preparing abstraction licence applications.
* Select appropriate trial wells for development into full production wells or specify precise location for new production wells.
* Act as the day-to-day client interface and conduct site visits for technical assessment and problem solving.
* Deliver hydrogeological risk assessments and desk‑top studies; supervise site investigations, including costing, procurement, soil and rock logging, sampling, scheduling of analyses, and monitoring.
* Log soils and rocks to British Standard B.S. 5930 and Eurocode 7.
* Prepare and review health and safety documentation, including risk assessments and method statements.
* Create factual and interpretative desk studies and site investigation reports with conceptual site models and quantitative water risk assessments.
* Design and implement site investigation data interpretation.
* Act as employer’s representative / supervisor on site investigation projects.
* Review junior staff work and support senior staff to ensure project delivery.
* Mentor junior staff, providing technical guidance and constructive support for report writing.
* Liaise with clients, local and wider geo‑environmental team members, and other disciplines on key projects.
* Participate in tenders and prepare fee proposals.
* Travel as required, hold a valid driver’s licence, work independently, and maintain strong communication skills.

Essential Skills / Qualifications and Experience

* Minimum of an Honours degree in Earth Sciences, Geology or Geochemistry. A master’s degree or doctorate in hydrogeology is preferred.
* Ability to analyse information and present it logically and accurately in reports or verbal presentations.
* Experience in designing and procuring groundwater abstraction investigations and conducting pumping test analysis for confined and unconfined aquifer systems.

* Excellent communication skills.
* Team player, able to work both within a large multidisciplinary team and independently.
* High level of personal responsibility, adaptability and flexibility to changing project requirements.
