Simpson Sturdy-Tie Vendor Product sales Representative Andrew Slezak spent his weekends for the past five months working on developing the deck of his dreams employing our Simpson Solid-Tie hardware. Discover what went into his DIY deck build and how he cannot wait to spend more time outside this summer season.
It all started when my fiancée, Hannah, and I moved into our new home. The old deck was outdated and needed to be replaced. As a semi-experienced DIY weekend warrior with multiple projects ongoing, I told Hannah, “It’ll take a weekend or two. Three weekends at most...” Well, five months later, I can finally say the deck project is complete, and Hannah is thrilled.
DIY Weekend Warrior Deck Project
I have been with Simpson Strong-Tie since March 2020, and I genuinely enjoy being part of a company that values work/life balance, community, and integrity. As a sales representative, I love interacting with customers and sharing knowledge about our products. I was excited to use a wide range of our solutions for my own deck build.
Using the Simpson Deck Planner Software
To plan the build, I used our free Deck Planner Software to visualize my ideas. The software was easy to use and helped me understand what my deck would look like. I also received help from my uncle and Simpson Strong-Tie representatives, including Jonathan.
Building the Deck
I installed all the deck boards using our Quik Drive auto-feed screw driving system. I was able to fasten 140 square feet of deck boards in about two hours over a weekend. Without Quik Drive, it would have taken at least two weekends, probably three.
Using Outdoor Accents Products
For faster, secure connections, I used our Outdoor Accents products, including ornamental post caps (APDPC), T strap (APT), L strap tie (APL), flat strap (APST), and 90° angle (APA). These connectors made assembly quick and straightforward. I also used the deck pressure tie (DTT2Z) to secure the guardrail posts.
Securing the Guardrails
The Outdoor Accents post bases (APB) are secured with 5/8″ x 5″ 304SS Titen HD bolts. Guardrails are often a weak point, but with the deck pressure tie connection, they are extremely sturdy. I am very pleased with the result.
Final Thoughts and Future Projects
Now that the deck is complete, we have a great outdoor space to entertain and relax. Built with Simpson Strong-Tie components, I am confident it is safe, durable, and built to last. My dad jokes that if a tornado hits, the house might be gone, but the deck would remain. My upcoming projects include building a retaining wall and parking pad. I’m also planning a sustainable butterfly garden—stay tuned!
