Job Description
Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for a Principal Primary HV Plant Design Engineer on a 12-month contract based in Leeds.
Role Summary
The main function of the role is to lead the HV Primary Engineering design delivery for electrical substation projects on the transmission network up to voltages of 400kV, with the assistance of Design Engineers and Designers. The Principal Plant Engineer will support the Design Delivery Managers in the day-to-day management of engineers and technicians. The role also involves leading planning and procurement responsibilities for substation project delivery. The position offers flexibility and can be based at various locations across the UK.
Key Accountabilities
1. Lead the design team to deliver designs that meet customer specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant and international standards and legislation.
2. Check and approve HV plant design deliverables such as single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design/calculations, etc.
3. Lead design work with regard to health & safety procedures and company obligations, ensuring compliance with current CDM regulations. Advise on risks and mitigation measures to the Engineering Manager.
4. Ensure models and drawings undergo adequate review and approval, including those from suppliers and subcontractors.
5. Incorporate BIM best practices established within the engineering team.
6. Guide the technical direction of the engineering team, adopting industry best practices and developments in engineering methodology.
General Responsibilities
1. Ensure all duties comply with company quality, health & safety, environmental procedures, and business process manuals.
2. Deliver engineering designs on time, within quality standards and budgets, promoting safety and sustainability by design.
3. Function as the authorized approver of designs on contracts according to established levels.
4. Identify and contribute to the development and training needs of the design team.
5. Manage inter-disciplinary design gaps collaboratively with project engineering managers.
6. Assist the Design Delivery Manager in daily departmental operations, including conducting PDRs and supporting team development.
Design Responsibilities
1. Identify relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with international standards and legislation.
2. Design work considering health, safety, and environmental procedures, including producing designer risk assessments as required to meet CDM regulations.
3. Design AIS and GIS substations up to 400kV.
4. Check and approve substation design deliverables, including diagrams, layouts, calculations, and earthing designs.
5. Understand electrical/mechanical interlocking philosophies.
6. Perform Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) roles or equivalent roles as defined by clients.
7. Perform Principal Designer representative roles as per CDM 2015 regulations.
8. Review equipment specifications and engage with suppliers for offer validation.
9. Examine contract documentation, establish scope of work, and highlight discrepancies with options for resolution.
Planning Responsibilities
1. Input into work package allocation, coordinate workload, and prioritize within the Primary Plant Team.
2. Prepare and review Design and Engineering Management Plans (DEMP).
3. Coordinate contract requirements with design engineers, project, and engineering managers post-contract award.
Requirements
Desirable Experience: Grid exposure, AutoCAD, TP 137 / SR 188 Principal Designer experience, Chartered Engineer (IET).
Personal Skills: Articulate and persuasive communication, strong leadership, innovative and results-focused, adaptable, self-motivated, and good planner.
