Base pay range

With a portfolio of development projects in a pre-consent application phase, the main responsibilities of the Environment Manager will be to lead and support the Development Team in providing environmental advice and input in connection with the successful delivery of each project through the planning and development process.

This work will be focused around environmental surveys and mitigation and include biodiversity net gain, habitat management, and wider cultural/nature enhancement measures which align with Welsh Government objectives, legislation and planning policy, and are progressed in such a way to meet the required commercial expectations, are deliverable and buildable, and in line with programme.

SALARY: From £65,000 per annum (skills and experience dependent)

REPORTS TO: Consents Director

LOCATION: Cardiff, Wales (Hybrid working)


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

* Manage the environmental aspects of the Green Gen Cymru portfolio and inform the design efforts of projects, helping ensure compliance with planning policy requirements and successful planning applications;
* Provide oversight and management support of relevant consultants to identify and address environmental constraints and opportunities within the portfolio;
* Provide guidance and support to project managers on environmental issues and protocols, including advice on key environmental risks and key document reviews;
* Identify and progress project mitigation and enhancement opportunities in consultation with third party advisors, relevant external groups and present such proposals internally in an effort to deliver these on time and on budget;
* Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities with the aim to maximise the benefits of the development portfolio;
* Understand, assess, and consider the key environmental indicators which determine what constitutes a viable project and play a lead role in increasing the consentability of all projects;
* Provide support and advice to the External Affairs Team in relation to nature and biodiversity gains within their aspect of work.


Key Accountabilities

* Collaborate with, and advise the wider Development Team in regard to potential constraints that may hinder the maximisation of development rights and consentability of each site and work to provide solutions against identified project risks;
* Lead in the identification and design of environmental initiatives which are to be brought forward as part of each projects planning application;
* Provide input and a technical review of appropriate sections of EIAs, technical appendices and scoping reports etc, to ensure compliance with relevant local and national policy as well as ensuring each project aligns with Green Gen Cymru’s goals and aspirations;
* Supporting project managers in overseeing external environmental consultants, to include the services associated with statutory stakeholder consultation, project, scoping, EIA, and planning application submissions;

Knowledge & Skills

* An in-depth understanding of the environmental/regulatory opportunities and challenges facing all stages of wind project development and the renewable industry;
* Detailed knowledge of the consenting drivers for a successful wind farm development and understanding of key project risks;
* Deep understanding of the planning system and environmental policy relating to renewable energy development;
* Deep understanding of the ecological, cultural and environmental initiatives which represent a best in class approach to wind farm and wider site design;
* Excellent interpersonal skills;
* An entrepreneurial approach and problem‑solving abilities;
* Strong personal resilience and hugely adaptable to situations;
* Excellent organisational and co‑ordination skills;
* Handling and co‑ordinating inputs from external consultants and project team members;
* Excellent influencing and negotiation skills.


Experience & Qualifications

* Between 5 – 7 years’ experience working in‑house in a development company or consultancy;
* Degree in an environmental science based subject or equivalent;
* Track record of successfully leading on the strategy and implementation of environmental initiatives and design within resource and budget constraints;
* Successfully dealing with planning authorities and other third party project stakeholders, including landowners, external consultants, interest groups and voluntary organisations;
* Input to the production and delivery of certain aspects of large‑scale infrastructure planning applications, Environmental Statements, and long term environmental/habitat/net gain plans.
