General Overview

The Unit Inspector is responsible for leading and coordinating all non-AMP inspection activities on their assigned business unit. The Unit Inspector receives work direction from the Lead Mechanical Integrity Engineer, functional guidance from the Chief Inspector and administrative supervision from the Mechanical Specialist & Inspection Supervisor. The Unit Inspector combines these to deliver inspection mechanical integrity for the business team, aligned with their Equipment Strategies (ES) and in accordance with the Global Inspection Practices (GIPs).


Principal Accountabilities

* Visual Inspections
o Field inspections
+ Completed according to the Equipment Strategy (ES) and in accordance with the Global Inspection Practices (GIPs) and local site guidance
+ Bring to the immediate attention of the Lead Mechanical Integrity Engineer any high severity items relating to the condition of the equipment being inspected which might give rise to a dangerous situation.
o Reporting
+ Ensure any damage is appropriately recorded in the inspection reports and categorized with appropriate follow up as per Mechanical Integrity Engineering procedures
+ Update inspection records as appropriate
+ Raise recommendations for repairs and follow-up inspections
+ Review with the Lead Mechanical Integrity Engineer the monthly inspection activities generated by the fixed equipment database and manage their worklist, and the worklist of other inspectors assigned to their unit.
* NDT Inspections
o Scopes
+ Review high cost and complexity completed NDT scopes from the Tech Centre to confirm intent of task met and that scope is practical and cost effective for installation in the field
+ Generation of Break-In emerging NDT request scopes
o NDT Review
+ Bring to the immediate attention of the Lead Mechanical Integrity Engineer any serious concerns relating to the condition of the equipment being inspected which might give rise to a dangerous situation
o Reporting
+ Ensure any degradation is appropriately recorded in the inspection file notes and categorized with appropriate follow up as per Mechanical Integrity Engineering procedures
+ Update inspection records as appropriate
+ Raise recommendations for repairs and follow-up inspections
* AMP Inspections
o Scopes
+ Review high cost and complexity completed AMP scopes from the Tech Centre to confirm intent of task met and that scope is practical and cost effective for installation in the field
o Field inspections
+ Liaise with Lead AMP Inspector to understand timing of execution and for involvement in any serious concerns relating to the condition of the equipment being inspected which may arise
o Work in collaboration with the Lead Mechanical Integrity Engineer to provide input to the unit’s vulnerability list and focus areas
o Maintain working knowledge of business unit’s emerging modelled SHE RC1s and 90 day risk verification window
o Support and assist with the Chief Inspector with training progression towards authorisation of the trainee inspectors assigned to the business unit, in accordance with their personal development plans
o Coordinate third party inspection services on the business unit for specialist inspection techniques, prepare work permits and field buddy as appropriate
o Take ownership for all MI driven AMP jobs in execution year, with the aim to verify the quality to ensure the full scope is completed and the tasks are properly mitigated to gain full credit in the ES
o Refine AMP scopes for the following years AMP for all MI driven line items. After completing GIP compliant inspection to allow for a competitive scope to be produced.


Job Requirements

* The Unit Inspector should have knowledge of inspection, NDT techniques, engineering materials, Quality Control, fabrication and welding. Also a basic familiarity of process flows within the given business team.
* The Unit Inspector will liaise with the Operations and Maintenance Departments on day to day operational problems and will advise the Lead Mechanical Integrity Engineer, Chief Inspector or Mechanical Specialist & Inspection Supervisor as required.
* The Unit Inspector should be familiar with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSRs) and capable of inspecting Major Equipment as defined by the Pressure Systems Legislation. The Unit Inspector must have suitable qualifications for RG2 Category 3, such as HNC or ONC and at least five years of relevant experience on pressure systems. Where these requirements are not met, the level of supervision must reflect this.


Qualification and Training

The Unit Inspector must be qualified and authorised as per Mechanical Integrity Engineering Central Authorisation Matrix.
