Role: Train Planning Specialist
Contract Type: Permanent
Location: Banbury ICC
Salary: £46,500 per annum

Job Purpose

* To manage the effective planning of short term alterations for commercial, special events or engineering requirements, as required by the Timetable Production Manager.

* To ensure that job specific activities do not introduce unacceptable business and safety risks to any aspect of the Company’s operation, and that the appropriate policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to, ensuring that all such activities comply with the relevant sections of the Safety Case and the current Safety Plan.

* To manage the base and amended distribution of train planning documentation within Chiltern Railways, London Underground, other Train Operating Companies and to Network Rail, including unit diagrams, simplifiers, stock workings and timetables.

* To provide support to the wider Train Planning team.

Key Accountabilities

* As required by the Timetable Production Manager, to prepare amended train plans in accordance with the specification as developed through the Amended Timetable Process. This will require amending train schedules, stock workings, simplifiers and unit diagrams, using the VoyagerPlan, Tracs-rs and Attune systems.

* Liaise with other Train Operators and Network Rail to achieve the most commercially attractive, well performing amended plan, including rail replacement services. Bid the amended plans to Network Rail and act upon the offer subsequently received.

* Ensure data integrity of all schedules and diagrams, and ensure all amended bids are correctly represented in industry and public systems.

* Complete, within set timescales, full documentation for amended plans, including station simplifiers, timetables, stock workings and unit diagrams.

* Brief the Lead STP Planner of the plan for onward briefing on the ‘Changes to Train Times’ web page.

* Liaise directly with Rail Replacement transport provider when necessary, and other departments as required.

* Liaise with Traincrew diagrammers to ensure services are timed to maximise the efficiency of drivers.

* To facilitate and manage the base documentation distribution, every May and December each year, within Chiltern Railways, London Underground, other Train Operating Companies and to Network Rail, including unit diagrams, simplifiers, stock workings and timetables.

* Documentation controller of all information that train planning create and distribute.

* Managing distribution channels to and from internal and external parties meeting industry timescales.

* Supporting the train planning team through the creation of Purchase Orders, reviews of invoices (e.g. rail replacement buses, taxis, passenger counts etc) and assisting in management of the team’s - movement sheet etc.

* Maintain and update documentation on the Chiltern Intranet (‘Platform C’) including new STP Timetables

* To assist the Planning Systems and Training Specialist with competence of the team as required.

* Monitor delays through daily log reports and liaise with the Delay Attribution Manager as part of the Performance Delay Attribution process, keeping the Timetable Production Manager informed.

Person Specification

* Experience in train planning is essential, along with a working knowledge of all aspects of scheduling principles and diagramming, including the processes used by Network Rail both for permanent schedules and short-term planning. Advanced training can be provided as required.

* Knowledge of either VoyagerPlan, Tracs-rs, Attune or equivalent is essential. Competency is required in Microsoft Office, with good knowledge of Excel essential.

* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are required together with good numeracy and an eye for detail and accuracy
