Please note that we are strictly looking for Maintenance Multi Traders who live in the West London or neighbouring boroughs.

Job Title: Gas Safety Engineer

Department: Maintenance

Reports to: Maintenance Team Leader

Working Hours: 9am-5:30pm Monday- Friday

Location: London

The Role

At Stef & Philips, the Gas Safety Registered Engineer plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the wellbeing of our residents and maintaining the integrity of our housing portfolio, which includes a diverse range of temporary accommodation, HMOs, and residential properties. The role exists not only to carry out the installation, servicing, maintenance, and repair of gas appliances and heating systems, but also to act as a compliance guardian—ensuring every property meets the highest standards of gas safety in line with legal requirements, contractual obligations with local authorities, and our own commitment to delivering safe, comfortable homes. Beyond technical expertise, the engineer provides reassurance and support to vulnerable tenants, responds rapidly to emergencies, and contributes to the smooth running of our housing services. By combining specialist knowledge, customer care, and a proactive approach to compliance, this role is central to Stef & Philips' mission of providing high-quality, safe, and sustainable accommodation solutions across the UK.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

1. Gas Installation, Servicing & Repairs

* Install, commission, service, and maintain gas-fired central heating systems, appliances, and associated controls.
* Diagnose and repair faults on boilers, heating systems, hot water systems, and other gas appliances.
* Undertake new installation works and support refurbishment projects in line with company and industry standards.
* Carry out system upgrades and replacements, ensuring efficiency and energy performance standards are achieved.

2. Planned & Preventive Maintenance (PPM)

* Perform annual gas safety checks and issue CP12 certificates.
* Carry out planned inspections, servicing, and preventative maintenance of domestic and commercial gas systems.
* Conduct performance testing, flue analysis, and appliance efficiency checks.
* Record and report findings, ensuring timely resolution of any non-compliance.

3. Reactive Maintenance & Emergency Response

* Respond promptly to emergency call-outs relating to gas leaks, carbon monoxide alerts, or appliance breakdowns.
* Safely isolate and make safe defective systems, liaising with emergency services where required.
* Ensure effective fault diagnosis and swift rectification to minimise disruption to tenants.

4. Compliance & Safety Management

* Ensure compliance with all statutory obligations including Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, Building Regulations, and Health & Safety at Work Act.
* Maintain comprehensive, accurate records of all works completed, including electronic job sheets, safety certification, and compliance evidence.
* Participate in internal and external audits, inspections, and quality assurance reviews.
* Promote and enforce QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety & Environment) policies across all work undertaken.
* Report all hazards, near-misses, and dangerous occurrences in line with company procedures.

5. Customer Service & Stakeholder Liaison

* Work sensitively in occupied homes, delivering services in a professional and respectful manner.
* Provide clear advice and guidance to tenants on gas safety, system usage, and energy efficiency.
* Liaise with coordinators, compliance officers, and supervisors to schedule works effectively and minimise delays.
* Represent the organisation positively when dealing with tenants, landlords, contractors, and regulators.

6. Operational & Team Contribution

* Assess required materials, parts, and equipment, ensuring cost-effective procurement.
* Ensure own tools and equipment are maintained to a professional standard.
* Support junior staff or apprentices with mentoring and technical guidance.
* Work flexibly across different sites to meet operational needs.
* Contribute to service improvement initiatives and departmental performance targets.

Skills, Experience & Knowledge

Essential

* Current Gas Safe registration with competencies covering boilers, fires, cookers, and water heaters.
* Proven experience in installation, servicing, fault diagnosis, and repair of gas appliances and heating systems.
* Excellent understanding of gas legislation, standards, and safe systems of work.
* Experience in working within residential and/or commercial property maintenance.
* Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and technical skills.
* Ability to work independently, manage a varied workload, and prioritise tasks effectively.
* Good IT literacy and ability to use handheld devices/PDA for reporting.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a customer-focused approach.
* Full clean UK driving licence.

Desirable

* Experience working in HMO housing or social housing environments.
* Additional qualifications in plumbing, unvented hot water systems (G3), or heating engineering.
* Commercial gas qualifications (COCN1, CODNCO1, ICPN1 etc.).
* Awareness of modern building management systems and controls.
* PASMA, IPAF, or Health & Safety training.
* Previous experience in military/MoD, facilities management, or multi-site maintenance environments.
