Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (EnACT) Location: HM Naval Base, Portsmouth (HMNBP) Service Area: Asset Management, EnACT Hours of Work: 37 Per week What You’ll be doing: As a vital member of the Engineering, Assurance and Compliance Team (EnACT), the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for delivering technical governance and assurance across mechanical and saltwater systems and equipment at HM Naval Base Portsmouth. Your role will ensure that all systems are safe to operate and fully compliant with legislative and regulatory standards. With a background in mechanical engineering and qualifications to HNC level or higher, you’ll bring proven experience and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions in a complex maritime infrastructure environment. You’ll take ownership of technical challenges, oversee the acceptance of mechanical elements in project designs, and ensure alignment with design intent. Your responsibilities will include producing and managing safety management systems for designated asset groups, supporting strategic infrastructure plans, and contributing to business improvement initiatives. Proactive communication and collaboration with team members will be key to resolving technical issues, while your input will also support the development of Asset Management Plans and the assessment of asset condition. Additionally, you’ll play a role in maintaining and enhancing EnACT’s technical competence, identifying opportunities for self-development and continuous improvement. You’ll Have: Ideally, you’ll be a qualified mechanical engineer with at least five years’ experience in the discipline, ideally holding professional membership with a recognised technical body and working towards IEng accreditation or equivalent. Your background will include health and safety training such as IOSH Managing Safely, CITB SMSTS, CSCS or similar, equipping you to operate confidently within a regulated and safety-critical environment. We’re looking for someone who can maintain a systems-level perspective while also understanding the detail behind component design and investigative rationale. You’ll have a good understanding of statutory and regulatory compliance within an industrial setting and be capable of safely meeting operational demands across all areas of Portsmouth Naval Base. A working knowledge of saltwater systems used in ship locking and docking is highly beneficial, alongside solid expertise in rotating machinery, hydraulic systems, and internal combustion engines. Your decision-making will be considered within your limits of authority, and you will be expected to escalate for direction as appropriate. You will have a solid grounding in mechanical engineering and be able to support colleagues in resolving complex technical challenges, contributing to a collaborative and solutions-focused environment. Strong communication and influencing skills are essential where you’ll establish clear communication routes, actively listen, provide and seek feedback. As a customer-facing role, you’ll be comfortable engaging with stakeholders and representing the organisation with credibility. Additionally, your organisational skills will ensure that you plan ahead, set clear objectives, manage time and resources efficiently, and regularly review progress to drive continuous improvement.
