Detailed job description and main responsibilities Respiratory Medicine at Glenfield manages 5 base respiratory wards (134 beds), each with a sub-specialist theme: Clinically we have specialist services in Lung cancer with advanced bronchoscopic and pleural techniques, Mesothelioma and regional MDT, pleural diseases, severe asthma: nationally commissioned centre, cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis, TB, advanced COPD, complex home ventilation, interstitial lung disease, exercise and sports medicine and allergy. Glenfield CDU is the largest single cardio-respiratory receiving unit in the UK taking 70 patients, on average, daily. 70% of our attendances are direct from primary care. Supporting this emergency workload we have established ambulatory emergency care (AEC) services for pulmonary embolism and pleural disease, GP assessment and same day emergency care (SDEC) Units. There are also comprehensive specialist nursing teams for COPD, asthma, lung cancer, ILD, ventilation, bronchiectasis/ CF, TB and pneumonia. The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. -To participate in general respiratory service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs. - Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures; -Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally. - In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work. -The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers - this might include investigations of incidents or complaints. -The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the postholder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers. -The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose. -The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to role. - The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated. Person specification Qualifications / Training Essential criteria MB BS or Equivalent Full GMC Registration Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist MRCP or Equivalent Desirable criteria Membership of relevant Specialist Societies e.g. British and European Thoracic Societies. Higher Degree or additional qualification. Experience Essential criteria Expertise in all aspects of Acute and Emergency Respiratory Care Management. Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan. Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems. Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach Desirable criteria Evidence of clinical commitment to, and sub-specialty training in CF and Bronchiectasis. Communication Essential criteria Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that allow adequate and effective communication with patients and colleagues. To be empathic and sensitive; capacity to take other perspectives and treat others with understanding. Highly Developed Emotional Intelligence Desirable criteria High standard of presentation both written and verbal Demonstrable track record of successful change management Proven ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment Management Essential criteria Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise others. Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles. Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload. Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS. Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills). Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues. Desirable criteria Evidence of management and administration experience. Management training on an accredited course. Experience of Service Development and Quality Improvement. Motivation Essential criteria Ability to motivate and develop both medical and non-medical staff across the MDT team Desirable criteria Commitment to further develop the post and respiratory service Audit/Quality Improvement Essential criteria Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement work Desirable criteria Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement. Research Essential criteria Understanding and interest in research. Ability to critically appraise research Apply research to clinical practice Desirable criteria Evidence of meaningful participation in research e.g. PhD, MD, PI/Co-I on non-clinical studies, PI or heavily involved Sub-I in clinical studies Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals Teaching Essential criteria Experience of and a commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduates. Appraisal and assessment skills. The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment. The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
