Offer description

Join to apply for the Family Liaison - Volunteer role at Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees

Your work will focus on helping refugee families settle confidently into life in Britain, providing guidance, encouragement, & practical support as they work toward independence and integration. You’ll be a key link helping them navigate everyday challenges and build a new life.

What difference will you make?

SWR Trustees play a critical role in making a positive impact on the lives of refugees in the Sevenoaks district and supporting our front‑line volunteers.

Why volunteer as VTL Member?

* Flexible & rewarding: Estimated 1–2 hours per week.
* Location: Swanley or able to travel to Swanley.
* Make an impact: Create meaningful events that bring people together and support refugee resettlement.
* Be part of a supportive team: Work with passionate volunteers and make new connections.

Our Commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

As a charity, we understand the value and importance of a diverse range of volunteers to represent all aspects and areas of the wider Sevenoaks community and the people we support. We value the contribution each volunteer makes to our work. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage you to highlight any specific adjustments that would enable you to participate fully in the recruitment process.

Who We’re Looking For

* Compassionate, patient, and non‑judgmental
* A good communicator, both in writing and in person
* Organised, with strong attention to detail
* Flexible and culturally sensitive to varying family needs
* Reasonably confident with IT tools (email, shared files, online forms, etc.)
* At least 3 years’ experience in public relations, volunteer management and safeguarding
* It would help if you had a background in health, teaching, social services or other service related charities – but it is not essential, a practical attitude is needed.

About The Role

As a Family Liaison, you’ll be the main point of contact for a refugee family, helping them access local services, education, and employment opportunities while offering encouragement and practical guidance. You’ll work closely with other SWR volunteers and leads to ensure families feel supported, informed, and connected as they settle into life in the UK. It’s a flexible, rewarding role for someone who’s empathetic, organized, and enjoys building supportive relationships.

Key Responsibilities

* Where the family is new, help them to settle in and pass on requests for help and equipment.
* See over the welfare and requirements of the family which will change incrementally over time. The level of support should gradually diminish as the family becomes more independent.
* Liaise with local government support workers (Refugee Council) as needed while the family is still receiving support from them.
* Liaise with the team around the family – general support, language and education – so that they work together; moderate a WhatsApp group for all volunteers supporting the family, whatever their role.
* Encourage and monitor the family’s path to independence.
* Liaise with Education, Language and Employment specialities.
* Keep the Volunteer Leadership Team (VLT) Family Support Lead up to date as needed.
