With a team of over 480 engineers and advisors supporting UK and global energy generation and infrastructure projects. We are leaders in supporting energy infrastructure, DCO, Grid connections and interconnector projects. Our UK based teams are structured across a combination of Sectors and Service Lines: Energy Transition and Transmission and Distribution have a sector focus while Advisory and Asset Management provide sector agnostic service across the lifecycle of our projects. Technology and Digital transformation offer opportunities for significant growth in these sector agnostic areas (supported by the technical engineering expertise across Energy Transmission and Transmission and Distibution).


Your Role

As an Offshore Cable Project / Mechanical Engineer, you will provide day-to-day expertise to the Offshore Cables Engineering team on offshore cable design including hardware design activities, making key technical decisions to support the project based on your experience. The role is client facing; a strong ability to communicate effectively is required. The role will support the Project Managers and Lead Offshore Engineer with project deliverables specific to the HVAC / HVDC Offshore Cable elements.


Your Responsibilities

* Conduct detailed design engineering for new projects, collaborating with other departments to ensure understanding of all customer/project requirements and to support the Proposals, Purchasing, Project Management, Quality and Production teams.
* Support the Offshore Transmission Team across a broad spectrum, focusing on cable engineering, hardware specifications for inter-array/export cables and project engineering support.
* Support the PM with progress updates of Engineering Deliverables throughout the project lifecycle and monthly reporting.
* Provide training, guidance and knowledge transfer to junior team members.
* Review client specifications and vendor documentation as required.
* Travel to client offices or sites alongside potential vendor engagement as needed.


General Deliverables

The Offshore Cable Project / Mechanical Engineer will support the project in the creation & coordination of the following typical documents:

* Electrical & mechanical designs, calculations, specification and report writing for HVAC and HVDC cables in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
* Pull-In Calculations.
* Windfarm layout designs / drawings
* General arrangement drawings
* Scope of Supply drawings
* Decommissioning Procedures
* Cable Accessories and Specification generation and where required review of vendor supplied documentation.
* Accessories include but not limited to: T-Connectors, Dropper Cables, CPS, Pull-in Equipment, Hang-Offs, Cable Cleats Breakaway systems, glands and temporary abandonment systems.
* Cable Protection System specification generation in support of procurement activities / vendor or client requirements.
* Understanding of Bend Restrictors, Bend Stiffeners, J-Tube Sealing, Buoyancy Modules is required.
* Installation, Operation and Maintenance procedure or guideline generation.
* Employer requirements, creation of technical documentation to support WSP’s clients with their procurement process.
* Understanding of PQQ, ITT processes and an ability to advise accordingly.
* Requirement for vendor engagement and interface coordination in support of works.
* Cable Route Engineering, including layout design, burial assessments and risk assessments.
* Proposal scopes of work, coordination and delivery.


What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate

* Must have an understanding of HVAC Inter Array Cable and Export cable design, specifications and requirements for 66kV – 132kV HVAC cables, including Design Basis, Design Reports and Current Rating Calculations. Knowledge and ability to design static and dynamic cables is required. Understanding of both static and dynamic applications would be advantageous.
* Experience with HVDC Interconnectors up to 525kV, including Design Basis, Design Reports and Current Rating Calculations. Knowledge and ability to design static and dynamic cables is required.
* Understand key elements of cable design and manufacture, including electrical cores, sheath, armour and outer layers.
* Perform calculations for electrical and mechanical cable ratings studies, including pull-in tensions & installation.
* Create engineered solutions considering project requirements, and coordinate across internal teams and external vendors/clients.
* Provide project engineering support with proposal coordination; engage with clients in support of offshore cable leads and project management; report concisely to clients.
* Experience with Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD; knowledge of other cable analysis software is beneficial.
