Do you want to lead change that improves the lives of children and families? Are you an experienced senior manager who has already led an operational social work service? If so, this role offers a rare opportunity to shape practice and drive transformation across an ambitious and values‑driven local authority. About the role We are looking for a Principal Social Worker who can lead large‑scale transformation with confidence and credibility. This role sets the standards for social work across Children’s Services and ensures that excellent, relationship‑based practice is at the heart of everything we do. You will guide the design and delivery of major programmes of change, including our workforce strategy, our Motivational Practice Model, and the implementation of national reforms. You will work closely with senior leaders to improve outcomes, strengthen culture and create the conditions for high‑quality, consistent practice. This is a senior leadership post with strategic influence, operational insight and responsibility for a significant budget. What you will lead Your work will focus on transforming how our social work system operates. You will: Lead culture change that supports skilled, confident and motivated practitioners. Strengthen quality assurance so that practice improves and learning is embedded. Shape workforce development, from ASYE to leadership pathways. Build a permanent, stable and diverse workforce. Provide insight on workforce trends and risks, supporting strategic decision‑making. Represent frontline practitioners at senior forums, ensuring their voice informs change. In addition to managing the Workforce Development team, you will influence every part of the practice system About you To succeed, you will already have been a senior social care operational manager with experience in managing the demands of frontline social work practice and leading a service through change. You will bring: A Social Work qualification and Social Work England registration. Senior leadership experience in a frontline children’s social care service. A track record of delivering improvement and managing change. Strong communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels. Experience working with budgets and delivering value for money. Commitment to inclusion and to building a culturally competent workforce. You will also bring curiosity, determination and a clear focus on outcomes for children and families.
