Our client is expanding their Highway Asset Maintenance team and are now seeking two Clerk of Works to support delivery of an enhanced surface treatment programme.
This is a predominantly site-based, mobile role (80–90%), ideal for someone who enjoys being out on network rather than office-based.
The Role
While the position includes traditional Clerk of Works oversight duties (approximately 20–30%), the majority of the role operates in an assistant engineer capacity.
You will be responsible for:
*
Pre-works site assessments
*
Recommending and validating sites for surface dressing programmes
*
Measuring, marking and preparing patching requirements
*
Supporting programme planning and delivery
*
Liaising closely with contractors on site
*
Monitoring contractor performance, specification compliance and quality standards
*
Coordinating multiple live projects across the network
*
Supporting preventative maintenance treatments including:
*
Surface dressing
*
Micro-asphalt
*
Footway slurry surfacing
*
Occasional involvement in winter service operations (experience not essential)
This is a delivery-focused role requiring practical engineering judgement and strong field presence.
About You
We are looking for someone with:
*
Relevant preventative highway maintenance experience (surface dressing, micro-asphalt, slurry surfacing or similar)
*
Experience overseeing contractors and ensuring specification adherence
*
Strong quality inspection and compliance monitoring skills
*
Experience coordinating multiple workstreams or projects
*
Ability to make sound engineering decisions on site
*
Prior local government or public sector highways exposure (desirable)
*
A Level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience
*
Valid UK manual driving licence
This role requires regular site attendance and significant walking, so applicants must be physically capable of working in a mobile, field-based environment.
Why Apply?
This is a permanent opportunity within a growing highways team backed by increased capital investment, offering long-term stability and the chance to play a key role in delivering preventative maintenance improvements across the network.
If you’re a practical, delivery-focused highways professional who prefers being on site rather than behind a desk, we would like to hear from you
