Biochemistry Clinical Scientist

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Northwick Park Hospital in the Biochemistry service. We are seeking an enthusiastic and self‑motivated individual to join our team of supportive Clinical Scientists. This is a 9‑month fixed‑term position to cover maternity leave, with plans to create a substantive role. Job Summary
This role supports the Clinical Lead and collaborates with the Laboratory Biomedical Scientist team to provide a comprehensive, consultative and accredited clinical biochemistry service. The scientist will liaise with The Doctors Laboratory and other users of the Trust’s biochemistry department, provide clinical and scientific advice to clinicians, develop and audit new methods of investigation, and take responsibility for protein electrophoresis.
Responsibilities
* Assist the Clinical Lead and coordinate with the Laboratory Biomedical Scientist team.
* Liaise with TDL and other service users to ensure a comprehensive biochemistry service.
* Provide clinical and scientific advice to clinicians regarding biochemical investigations and interpretation.
* Collaborate in the development, study and laboratory control of new methods, including participation in audit and research programmes.
* Be professionally accountable for the provision of the clinical service and use evidence‑based practice to improve care.
* Acquire and develop knowledge of local and national clinical governance and risk management strategies.
* Take clinical responsibility for protein electrophoresis.
Qualifications
* MSc Degree in Clinical Biochemistry.
* Registration as a clinical scientist with the Health Care Professions Council.
* FRCPath Part 1 or evidence of working toward the Fellowship exam of the Royal College of Pathologists.
* Relevant PhD (desirable).
Experience
* Post‑graduate laboratory experience.
* Experience of planning and carrying out audits.
* Evidence of providing comprehensive professional advice in Clinical Biochemistry (desirable).
Knowledge
* Extensive clinical biochemistry knowledge to doctor level or equivalent.
* Expert knowledge in one or more specialist analytical and clinical areas.
* Knowledge of protein electrophoresis principles.
* Evidence of development of laboratory services (desirable).
Skills
* Analytical and technical skills in general and specialised areas.
* Capability to undertake supervised laboratory medicine research.
* Ability to advise medical and nursing staff on investigations and interpretations.
* Ability to recognise abnormality patterns and assess differential diagnoses.
