We have an exciting opportunity to join our team in Spalding as an Engineering Manager
As Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and ongoing development of all engineering functions at Poplar Farm Flowers. This is a hands-on, autonomous role with a broad remit—covering machinery maintenance, site infrastructure, health and safety compliance, and engineering-led improvements. You’ll be the farm’s go-to expert for technical performance and site integrity, working closely with internal teams and external contractors to maintain high operational standards.
Core Responsibilities
* Plan and implement the farm’s Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme
* Respond effectively to machinery breakdowns, troubleshooting faults and coordinating repairs
* Monitor and optimise the performance of automated systems, grading lines, conveyors, and other key equipment
* Ensure reliable availability of critical spare parts and maintenance tools
* Identify trends in equipment performance and take proactive measures to improve reliability and reduce downtime
* Maintain and oversee the farm’s physical infrastructure, including buildings, glasshouses, internal roads, and hardstanding areas
* Lead maintenance of utilities and services such as water, power, heating, and ventilation
* Conduct regular inspections to ensure that all facilities meet safety and operational requirements
* Support energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives across the site
* Act as the responsible person for all engineering-related health and safety matters
* Carry out and review risk assessments related to maintenance and contractor activity
* Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory standards relevant to machinery and site facilities
* Keep clear records of safety checks, maintenance logs, and contractor activity
* Coordinate external contractors for planned maintenance, repairs, and specialist services
* Oversee small-scale engineering and infrastructure projects from planning to completion
* Collaborate with operations teams to ensure engineering supports business needs effectively
* Recommend and implement upgrades or new technologies that improve site operations

* Recording stock to ensure accurate stores management, keeping records up to date for audit purposes
* Driving innovation and improvement initiatives to enhance performance and reduce downtime.
What you can already do
* Broad engineering experience in a production, agricultural, or industrial environment
* Strong hands-on capability in mechanical and/or electrical systems
* Comfortable managing all aspects of site and equipment maintenance independently
* Strong understanding of health & safety and engineering compliance standards
* Confident in coordinating third-party contractors and service providers
* Skilled at balancing reactive and planned maintenance demands
* Relevant qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Agricultural Engineering
* Experience with horticultural equipment, automation, or glasshouse systems an advantage
* Familiarity with energy-efficient technologies or renewable energy systems
* Working knowledge of maintenance management software (CMMS or equivalent)
