Cambridge Nucleomics is a start-up developing a one-hour automated point-of-care sepsis test based on a proprietary rapid native RNA counting assay developed in the Keyser Lab, University of Cambridge. We are hiring our first two laboratory scientists to develop an early version of our sepsis assay by solving the key tasks shown below and you will be working directly with the two founders. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in the field with at least two years’ relevant experience plus a strong background in at least two of the below key skills. This is an exciting opportunity to use and learn our State of the Art RNA-counting assay. You will make a massive difference to our small team and working together to develop a proof-of-concept system of our life-saving sepsis test. This is a wonderful opportunity to take ownership for a project that will make a real difference to patient lives and grow your responsibility as the start-up grows.
Key tasks (shared between two scientists)
* Project planning and conducting laboratory experiments both independently and in a small team. We expect you to take full ownership of the project and report directly to the leadership team.
* Developing technologies to separate bacteria and fungi from blood at a cellular level.
* Developing technologies to separate microbial from human RNA.
* Bioinformatics analysis to identify conserved motifs in (ribosomal) rRNA that are unique to the most common microbial species causing sepsis.
* Learn how to use our proprietary DNA nanostructures to detect native RNA on solid-state nanopores, design nanostructures and perform measurements. Be open to learning more about the underlying biophysics.
Key skills & education (shared between two scientists)
* PhD with 1-12 years’ relevant experience in academia or industry; compensation & job title will scale appropriately with experience
* RNA handling, extractions, purification & enrichment from bacteria/fungi
* Blood work, cell extractions/purifications/enrichment/depletion, preferably with bacteria/fungi, assay optimisation
* Bioinformatics & bacterial/fungal genetics for sequence alignments, find conserved/unique motifs, preferably in rRNA, experience with rRNA databases
* Biophysics or third-generation sequencing
Optional skills
* Molecular diagnostic tests
* Experience with regulatory frameworks and quality management systems
* Blood culture
This is a permanent lab-based position in Cambridge, UK. Salary range £35,000-£50,000 depending on qualifications, fit and experience plus potential options package and performance-based bonus. 25 days leave as standard for full time employees.
