Senior Health & Safety Manager (Rail)
Location: London or Birmingham
Salary: £70,000 - £75,000 + £6,000 car allowance + benefits
We’re supporting a leading engineering contractor delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UK, including major works within the rail, underground, and tram sectors. The business combines Tier 1 capability with Tier 2 agility, offering design, delivery, and maintenance services across M&E, Fire and Telecommunications engineering.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety professional to lead HSE delivery across a portfolio of rail and underground projects, driving a positive safety culture, ensuring compliance, and influencing continuous improvement across all operational activities.
The Role
As Senior Health & Safety Manager (Rail), you will act as the HSE subject matter expert and Rail Co‑ordinator, maintaining RISQS accreditation and supporting the safe planning and execution of on‑ or near‐line activities. You’ll lead safety initiatives, audits, investigations and client engagement across projects with major rail stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as the Rail HSE lead, maintaining RISQS accreditation and supporting Network Rail Principal Contractor activities.
* Provide strategic and operational HSE leadership across all rail and underground works.
* Conduct audits, inspections and investigations, ensuring effective close‑out of actions.
* Support tenders, work‑winning and mobilisation of new contracts.
* Lead safety engagement, behavioural programmes and wellbeing initiatives.
* Drive compliance with Network Rail, London Underground and industry standards.
About You
You’ll be a confident, proactive HSE professional with strong rail experience, excellent stakeholder engagement skills and a passion for promoting a positive safety culture.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* NEBOSH or NCRQ Diploma (or equivalent)
* Sentinel / PTS certification
* Previous experience in a rail‑based HSE management role (Tier 1 / Tier 2 organisation)
* Strong understanding of Network Rail standards and RISQS protocol
* Proven track record in audits, investigations and HSE leadership
* Full UK driving licence
Desirable
* ISO 45001 internal auditor experience
* Chartered IOSH membership (or working towards)
* ILM Level 3 or similar management qualification
