Salary & Benefits
Base salary: £41,092 per annum to £48,344 per annum depending on skills and experience. In addition, a flexible benefits fund of 15% is paid on top of base salary and is fully pensionable, along with other competitive benefits.
About the role
As an Environment Manager EK at HS2, you will be responsible for providing professional and technical support to ensure compliance with environmental minimum requirements, and that design and construction are in accordance with organisational and sponsor requirements, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations. The role provides guidance on environmental design solutions and ensures environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design.
* Support technical assurance through production, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates.
* Assist the Senior Environment Manager in organising, coordinating and undertaking the environmental element of the HS2 risk‑based technical assurance of the works performed and assured by Integrated Project Teams (IPT).
* Authorise mandatory approvals by ensuring contractor designs and construction works are undertaken in accordance with the Environmental Minimum Requirements (EMRs), with particular emphasis on the General Principles and the CoCP.
* Manage and communicate HS2 Environment & Sustainability requirements to the Integrated Project Teams’ contractor.
* Provide guidance for environmental design solutions for the asset and ensure environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design.
* Support the Senior Environment Manager with internal and external reporting of environmental matters.
* Liaise with technical stakeholders via various forums at local, regional and national levels and the local community on sensitive issues.
* Develop appropriate and cost‑balanced mitigation strategies and solutions with other technical specialists.
* Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all work, supporting and complying with organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
About you – Skills
* Complex problem solving – ability to identify, review, analyse and interpret a wide range of data, evaluate options and implement solutions consistently with other work.
* Decision making – gather and synthesise information, identify options and apply judgement based on logic and reason, and use analytical approaches to provide relevant information to suppliers, stakeholders and decision makers.
* Technical Leadership – provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline‑specific scientific, technical and environmental principles, knowing when to seek guidance from subject matter experts.
* Communication – effectively communicate many discipline‑specific technical ideas to colleagues, based on a mix of training and examples of application.
* Data management – apply principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security, with basic understanding of data creation and visualisation, working under supervision or in liaison with relevant experts.
Knowledge
* Applicable UK environmental law and other relevant construction (including CDM) regulations.
* Understanding of the regulatory/legislative framework relevant to HS2.
* Commercial awareness, including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
* Membership of an appropriate professional institution or equivalent experience.
Experience
* Managing standards, engineering and environmental activity on large complex major projects/programmes.
* Managing competing project, engineering and environmental demands with cost and schedule implications.
