In our quest to deliver patient-focused quality care we are looking to recruit a highly motivated, innovative and enthusiastic Ward Manager to join our forward thinking, friendly and expanding Health & Justice team at Tasman/Java, Low Secure Services. By joining our Prisons Health Care Team, you will look after the healthcare needs of patients residing in secure environments and promote health and well-being. Our services operate a 7-day week working model to ensure patient healthcare is always managed and maintained to the highest standards. Our motto is “Caring NOT Judging” as we work in partnership with the criminal justice system and other agencies to provide responsive, dependable and high-quality primary care and mental health services to those who may have offended and those at risk of offending in the communities we serve.

Main duties of the job

* The Ward Manager will have overall management responsibility for the delivery of care within the ward, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
* Lead a team of nursing staff in the delivery of high-quality evidence-based practice, ensuring regular supervision and appraisal take place.
* Manage administrative and operational resources in a cost-effective manner, evaluating the standard of service delivered.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary working, maintaining excellent communication and working relationships with all team members and other services within the Trust to ensure effective interface and continuity of care.
* Carry out nursing procedures to a standard that ensures safe and effective care and comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct.
* Be a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in clinical areas providing assistance, advice and support to staff, patients, relatives, carers and visitors.

Qualification

Essential criteria

* Registered Mental Health Nurse with significant experience
* Mentor qualification / ENB 998 or equivalent / Completed Mentorship Course
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
* Physical Intervention training

Desirable criteria

* Postgraduate qualification related to ward specialty
* Management courses
* Degree or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential criteria

* Significant experience of Managing Clinical Practice at Band 6 / equivalent level
* Demonstrable experience of managing people and complex staffing issues, including performance
* Experience of implementing and monitoring standards of care
* Experience of providing clinical and managerial supervision
* Experience of working in a multicultural environment and developing culturally sensitive practice
* Experience of Clinical Governance including auditing
* Experience of inpatient services and working as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Experience of recruitment and selection of staff
* Experience of providing both clinical and managerial supervision to staff and mentoring students

Desirable criteria

* Experience or working on a PICU
* Experience of working with other client groups and various care models
* Experience of managing non-clinical staff and other professionals
* Experience of staff performance management
* Experience of implementing significant changes in working practices
* Experience of project management

Knowledge & Understanding

Essential criteria

* Working knowledge of relevant legislation for acute mental health care including Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, Children’s Act, Equality Act 2010, Health and Safety Act, Data Protection Act, Human Rights Act, NSF, and relevant safeguarding frameworks
* Thorough knowledge of safeguarding adults and children
* Understanding of the role of other organisations providing services to people with mental ill-health
* Understanding of care planning and the Care Programme Approach (CPA)

Desirable criteria

* Knowledge of performance management procedures

Skills

Essential criteria

* Skills in developing and changing clinical practice
* Effective verbal and written communication and IT literacy (MS Office)
* Ability to build high standards of professional links and communication with a variety of personnel and agencies
* Ability to analyse complex issues, gather information and exercise sound judgement
* Time management and ability to deliver work on time and to a high standard

Desirable criteria

* Ability to present complex information to various audiences
* Change management
