Assistant Director of Community Engagement, Chelmsford Public Library (Chelmsford)
The Chelmsford Public Library is seeking a dynamic leader who views the library as more than a building—it's a bridge to the community. This role requires strategic thinking about reaching all residents, especially those who have not yet connected with the library, and the ability to transform big ideas into real initiatives that make a difference.
As Assistant Director of Community Engagement, you will lead outreach and engagement strategy, oversee Mobile Library Services, build partnerships across town, and guide marketing efforts. You will work closely with department heads to expand services beyond our physical walls, creating a library presence where people discover “I didn’t know the library did that!”. Additionally, you will ensure that everyone—regardless of who they are—feels welcomed, included, and knows they belong.
Your role will blend leadership of major initiatives with staff support. You should thrive on collaboration and understand that great community engagement starts with strong staff relationships. The position involves writing grant proposals, facilitating staff training, gathering community feedback, and supporting staff wellness. You will supervise our Marketing Specialist and partner with department heads to align goals and execute initiatives together.
We’re looking for someone who can shift between big‑picture strategy and practical implementation, is comfortable with ambiguity, and ready to try new approaches as community needs evolve. Tell us about a time you identified an underserved community and developed a responsive program. How did you measure success?
The library and community are a fun and rewarding place to work! Our engaged residents, Town counterparts, staff, Trustees, and Friends are excited to turn new ideas into reality and support professional growth. This leadership role offers real influence on how the library shows up for the community and how we support staff in doing meaningful work.
