We are recruiting for the role of a Welding Engineer to support the Royal Navy’s nuclear powered submarine fleet.
The Welding Engineer will be responsible for developing and implementing welding techniques across manual, automated and mechanised processes for the manufacture of Primary Circuit and Core components.

What you will be doing
* Influence the design and manufacture of critical components within the Submarines Pressurised Water Reactor system.
* Select and implement appropriate welding techniques, processes and procedures to ensure quality and efficiency.
* Lead continuous improvement initiatives from concept through to delivery and implementation.
* Drive improvements in manufacturing processes, factory performance and production flow to maintain uninterrupted operations.
* Collaborate closely with Manufacturing and Engineering teams, providing specialist welding and process expertise.
* Support shop-floor activities, including resolving non‑conformances, conducting root‑cause investigations and improving cell performance.
* Assist welders and manage Welder Qualifications in line with internal and industry standards.
* Contribute to manufacturing meetings and reviews to ensure SQCDP metrics are achieved and aligned with business goals.
Who we’re looking for
Professional welding qualifications are highly beneficial (e.g. IIW/EWF Welding Engineer or Technologist status, IEng or CEng status, MSc Welding Engineering).
Professionally Qualified Engineer in an engineering discipline.
Competent in identifying, developing, qualifying and justifying welding techniques in accordance with design code, ideally within a relevant industry.
Knowledge and experience of working to boiler and pressure vessel design and manufacturing standards.
Demonstrates product and process safety is paramount, assuring compliance with regulatory, code, design, manufacturing and Quality Assurance requirements.
Proven ability to plan, monitor and control projects ensuring delivery to cost, quality and schedule, while communicating complex technical information effectively.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills desirable.

Welding QA/QC Engineer – Submarines
Job Title: Welding QA/QC Engineer – Submarines
Working Pattern: Days
Working Location: Derby (Onsite)
Responsible for inspecting welding activities, maintaining quality standards and ensuring compliance with industry codes across all welding operations.

What you will be doing
* Visual weld inspection of components, assessing imperfections against internal acceptance criteria.
* Surveillance of welding operations, verifying compliance with Welding Procedure Specifications.
* Undertake pre‑weld checks including joint fit‑up and equipment availability.
* Raise stops and holds to production routers for deviations or non‑conformances, communicating through reports and presentations.
* Act as Special Processes representative, liaising with production, NDE and Engineering for welding inspection.
* Support Special Processes Welding Engineering team for development of special applications.
* Assist Supplier Quality Engineers with Procedure Qualification Records and Welder Qualifications.
* Undertake defect root cause analysis and propose preventative actions.
* Ensure compliance with welding consumable control according to SOP and work instructions.
Who we’re looking for
Preferably current CSWIP 3.1 or PCN Level 2 in Visual testing. Experience in visual inspection of pressure vessels, pipe work, valves and cladding.
Experience with Remote Visual Inspection equipment and borescopes.
Knowledge of ISO 5817 / ASME IX standards.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with RCA tools.
Practical welding experience (manual and/or mechanised) desirable.

Salary: Up to £74,000 + Benefits + Bonus
Opportunity to join Rolls‑Royce Submarines as a Senior Design Engineer.
What you will be doing
* Creating Full Life Cycle Design solutions for components/assemblies/systems.
* Integrating cross‑discipline engineering concepts, collaborating across manufacturing, simulation, materials, testing and supply chain.
* Documenting and verifying information against mechanical engineering practices.
* Presenting at technical reviews to peers and experts.
* Publishing safety and technical reports subject to regulatory scrutiny.
Who we’re looking for
* Experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with exposure to process plant, mechanical components, machining, tooling, handling, lifting, pressure vessels, boilers or assembly processes.
* CAD Design Software experience.
* Experience from Civil Nuclear, Marine, Defence, Aerospace, Petro‑Chemical, Oil & Gas, Special Purpose Machinery, Automotive.
* Engineering qualification or relevant experience (Chartered/Degree/HND/HNC/Apprentice Trained).

Lead the development life‑cycle to increase component availability and safety, from literature review through testing and regulatory approval to implementation as quality‑assured software.
