Legacy Network Architect
Birmingham (4 days on-site) | Full-time | SC Eligible
The Opportunity
We’re partnering with a major consultancy on a mission-critical role for a Legacy Network Architect to support a high-impact telecoms transformation programme. Based on-site in Birmingham, this role offers a rare opportunity to work hands-on with heritage telecoms infrastructure – essential to enabling the long-term shift from circuit to packet-based networks.
If you’re an experienced engineer with deep, practical knowledge of legacy systems and a background in providers like BT, Vodafone, or EE, this is your chance to bring your expertise to a role that genuinely needs it. With few roles of this kind still open in the UK market, this is a highly unique opportunity for the right profile.
What You’ll Do
• Lead the analysis, design, and transition of legacy telecoms infrastructure, supporting the migration from traditional circuit-switched technology.
• Work extensively on-site in a dedicated lab environment to test, simulate, and validate system behaviours – developing practical solutions where documentation and online resources are no longer available.
• Collaborate with wider network engineering and architecture teams to ensure continuity of service and performance during technology transition.
• Deliver in-depth technical investigations, performance analysis, and support the end-client’s transformation programme.
Key Skills & Experience
• Solid, hands-on background in legacy telecoms networks, including circuit-switched systems and packet conversion (circuit-to-packet).
• Deep familiarity with SDH, PDH, ATM, Frame Relay, or similar legacy protocols and systems.
• Experience working within telecoms environments (BT, Vodafone, EE, or similar carriers).
• Comfortable working in a lab-based role, building solutions from the ground up.
• Clearance: SC eligible (most suitable candidates will likely already hold SC due to industry norms).
The Fit
You’re likely a telecoms veteran – someone who’s worked with this kind of infrastructure for years and instinctively knows how it behaves. This isn’t a theoretical or research-based role – it’s hands-on problem-solving with old tech that’s still mission-critical. If you’ve ever said “I’ve worked with that kit, I know exactly how it behaves,” this is the job for you.
The Package
• Salary: £70,000
• Car Allowance: £6,000
• Bonus: 10%
• Full benefits package: includes private healthcare, pension, and more
• Hybrid model – minimum 4 days per week on-site in Birmingham lab, flexibility for 1 day remote depending on workload
