The James Marks Academy operates in its brand new home in Welwyn. The school has state of the art facilities and supports pupils with high anxiety, communications and poor self-esteem/mental health which has often led to school refusal. The school currently supports 65 pupils; this will rise to 72 when full in 2027.
The building is relatively new, so whilst the maintenance side of the caretaker role is initially more limited, we do need someone who is adaptable and able to understand the electronic systems that enable the building to function. Support and training on the systems will be provided by our Trusts' site manager who operates out of sister school, Roman Fields, but will attend the James Marks Academy once a week for the foreseeable future. He will ensure the successful candidate is confident in all aspects of the role, before he reverts back to his existing role.
We are looking to recruit an experienced tradesman/groundsman to support our Site Manager. The post will be primarily based in Welwyn, but it is expected that the Site Manager and Caretaker are able to cover each other's annual leave, so some working across sites will be required when needed. Mileage and travelling time will be paid on these occasions.
The candidate must be enthusiastic, flexible, self-motivated, efficient, able to work on their own initiative, work to deadlines and remain calm under pressure. Clear knowledge of Health and Safety will be advantageous as is the ability to keep clear premises records.
Please review the Caretaker duties and responsibilities, as well as the person specification in this application pack. Please note that all applicants must complete an application form as lone CVs will not be accepted.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and expect all staff and volunteers to share in this obligation. The successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced disclosure by the DBS.
An application pack and further details are available from our HR central team: or email, or alternatively please see the vacancy section on our websites where the application pack can be downloaded.
Closing date for applications is close of business on 17th October 2025. Candidates are welcome to call and speak to Scott Martin (Head Teacher) and/or arrange to visit the school site. Please contact the school office on to make the necessary arrangements.

About Roman Fields Academy
Roman Fields Academy
11 Box Lane, Hemel Hempstead
Hertfordshire
HP3 0DF
United Kingdom
Roman Fields is a county wide provision based near Hemel Hempstead. In 2018, Roman Fields was awarded the National Autistic Society's Excellence award their very top award, given annually to one school/college/provider only. Soon after, we had a successful Ofsted inspection, where we were graded "Outstanding" in all areas.
Roman Fields became an academy in April 2021 and will be a standalone academy within the James Marks Academy Trust, until it is joined by a second school, the purpose-built free school, the James Marks Academy, in Sept 2023.
Our small trust and the academies within it, will provide pupils, with bespoke timetables that build on their strengths and interests and thus allow them to both re-engage with, and re-discover their love of learning. We offer a provision for a wide range of abilities, including functional skills, vocational qualifications, GCSE and A Level. Please see our examination results on our website, as we are exceptionally proud of our pupils and their achievements.
Our trust is built on academic achievement and relationships, as these are the drivers that enable pupils to flourish personally, socially and emotionally too.
Our aim is to ensure our pupils leave us with clear goals and ultimately become the successful, happy, economically active adults they can be.
All pupils on roll have an EHC plan. Most of our pupils have an autism diagnosis, some have multiple diagnoses including SEMH. The vast majority of our pupils are in KS and KS we have a core offer of Maths, English, Science and ICT or Business. The rest of an individual pupil's timetable will be designed around their interests. We are also able to offer Humanities, Art and Music up to GCSE and beyond.
If you are a passionate, committed professional who recognises how much progress pupils can make when support and challenge are in equilibrium, and relationships are strong, we would welcome your application.
