Job Description
Engineer (Materials / Process Development)
If you enjoy understanding how data, chemistry and process come together, and you like working closely with the lab to improve how materials are made, this could be a great fit.
This role sits within a fast-moving, materials-focused business developing next-generation bio-based materials for high-performance applications. You will work closely with scientists and laboratory teams, analysing experimental data and providing structured technical feedback on materials and chemicals being produced. Using this insight, you will help translate laboratory protocols into processes that are robust, repeatable and scalable.
It is a strong opportunity for an Engineer who enjoys problem-solving at the interface of science and engineering, is comfortable working with data, and likes being close to the lab rather than removed from it.
What you will be doing:
Working closely with laboratory scientists and engineers, you will help bridge experimental work and process development. This will include:
* Analysing experimental and process data to understand material behaviour and performance
* Working hands-on with the lab to review results and provide feedback on chemicals and materials being produced
* Supporting the development and optimisation of processes from lab-scale through to pilot-scale activity
* Translating laboratory protocols into clear, repeatable and scalable process steps
* Identifying sources of variation and recommending improvements to materials, formulations or process conditions
* Supporting the creation and refinement of SOPs and process documentation
* Collaborating with scientific and engineering teams to meet development and scale-up goals
* Operating and supporting lab or pilot equipment where required
* Adhering to laboratory safety, quality and regulatory standards
What we are looking for:
* A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (2:1 or 1st) in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline
* Strong ability to understand, analyse and interpret experimental and process data
* Comfortable working closely with laboratory teams and providing constructive technical feedback
* An interest in process engineering and translating science into practical, scalable solutions
* Strong organisation, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
* The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary environment
* Clear written and verbal communication skills
* Experience in materials development, process engineering or scale-up environments
* Exposure to statistical tools such as DOE, SPC or other data-driven process improvement methods
* Familiarity with polymers, biomaterials or textile-related processing
* Experience supporting pilot-scale or early manufacturing activities
