Senior Account Manager - External Relations - 98945 - Grade 7 at University of Birmingham. Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK. Full time, permanent. Closing date: 23 September 2025. Salary: £36,636–£46,049 with potential progression to £48,822. UK travel may be required.
Role Summary
We are a full-service agency within External Relations supporting the University’s strategic framework. The Senior Account Manager will manage a portfolio of key clients, delivering an excellent, high-quality service alongside playing a key role in supporting business growth and ensuring our services align to the needs of our customers, now and in the future.
Main Duties
* Work with the Head of Account Management to deliver exceptional service alongside the wider Account Team, including training and development of the team (especially junior colleagues) and potentially line managing three Account Managers.
* Understand client requirements and translate these into a creative brief while adhering to the University identity principles.
* Prepare quotations, write up briefs and detail schedules for clients.
* Build close long-term relationships with current and new clients, gaining in-depth knowledge of their requirements and effectively interpreting their brief.
* Manage and deliver the portfolio of projects, focusing on high-profile, high-value and high-priority initiatives.
* Provide strategic marketing input to clients, making recommendations to enhance briefs for added value and specialist expertise.
* Present pitches and creative solutions on behalf of CM and host meetings with clients at various levels across the University.
* Coordinate between clients, third-party suppliers and internal CM teams to ensure delivery within budget, deadline and brief criteria.
* Support the Head of Account Management in developing and delivering the CM sales and marketing plan.
* Regularly report on project status, manage client expectations and maintain relationships with the team and Head of Account Management.
* Deputise for the Head of Account Management where necessary.
* Act as a role model to other team members, championing ER values and behaviours and promoting equality and diversity in the workplace.
Person Specification
Level of knowledge and/or educational qualifications:
* Educated to at least degree level in Marketing, Advertising, Media Studies, Business Management or a Design/Creative discipline and/or extensive experience in a similar role.
* Proven client account management expertise or other relevant experience.
* Proven people/team management experience.
* Experience of managing and delivering projects (media experience would be a bonus).
* Experience of working with commercial brands.
Skills/Attributes required:
* Strong communication and presentation skills.
* Well-developed managerial and organisational skills, including planning, scheduling, prioritising and meeting deadlines.
* Ability to monitor project budgets and resources.
* Ability to work in a self-motivated team environment.
* Proven ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail.
Level of previous experience required:
* Proven account management or relevant experience in an agency setting.
* Experience in delivering client-focused solutions based on customer needs.
