Summary:
Are you experienced in ensuring environmental compliance and promoting sustainable practices in engineering projects? Do you excel at navigating complex regulations and engaging with specialists and stakeholders? As an Environmental Performance Officer Engineering, you will support the Environmental Performance Team to manage environmental aspects of projects from design to construction, aiming to reduce environmental impact, ensure compliance, and promote good and sustainable practices.
You will collaborate with engineering teams, consultants, and contractors on assessments, desktop evaluations, and contract documentation. Given the diverse landscapes of SEW sites, including protected areas and habitats, experience in mitigation and stakeholder engagement is essential. The role also involves auditing construction compliance and reporting, with opportunities to specialize in Invasive Non Native Species and Strategy.
Main Responsibilities
* Environmental desktop appraisal and sign-off for investment projects, advising on environmental sensitivities and project progression.
* Engagement with regulators for permits and advice, and reporting back to the business.
* Collaborate with technical specialists to provide practical solutions based on assessments.
* Work with project teams to minimize environmental impact, providing cost and time forecasts.
* Conduct audits and site inspections for compliance, reporting KPIs against environmental commitments.
* Assist in training programs for project teams.
* Report to regulators and stakeholders, including water industry bodies.
* Promote sustainability, circular economy, and environmental goals across the organization.
* Manage and mentor apprentices and graduates within the team.
Qualifications and Experience
* Degree in an environmental field or equivalent experience.
* Experience managing environmental risks across diverse settings, with pragmatic solutions to minimize harm.
* Strong communication skills to work with colleagues, contractors, stakeholders, and regulators.
* People management skills, including managing small teams and external relationships.
* Relevant experience in an environmental role, especially within process environments and incident response.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
* Chartership or progress towards chartership with CIWEM, CIEEM, CIWM, or Institute of Water.
* Specialist background (e.g., archaeology, arboriculture, EIA, protected species licensing).
* Mentoring and leadership abilities.
* Report writing and data presentation skills.
* Experience in habitat restoration, survey work, and working in habitats like woodland and heathland.
* Experience with protected species mitigation and biodiversity net gain.
