Main duties of the job
* Deliver care to people with mental health issues who are receiving inpatient care in an acute physical health setting, often on a 1:1 basis.
* Support all clinical areas of the Trust as required.
* Take personal responsibility to ensure that Trust and local policies and procedures are followed in accordance with the NMC code of Professional Conduct.
* Assess, plan, provide, maintain and evaluate patient care.
* Supervise and guide other staff including health care assistants and students as required.
Applicants Must
* Hold RMN registration with current NMC license to practice
* Minimum of 12 months post-qualification experience (15 months for NQN’s – 3 months preceptorship, then 12 months acute experience)
* Recent acute hospital experience within the last 18–24 months
* Drive to work hard, enthusiasm and ability to commit to a 4-day induction programme if successful
* Right to work in UK (with relevant Adaptation/ONP if applicable)
* Ability to commence work within 3 months of offer

* Maintain the standards of professionalism expected of a registered nurse, and work to the standards described within the NMC code of conduct.
* Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Take regular responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
* Work with direction from the patient’s care plan and escalate any concerns appropriately.
* Support a patient with their mental health concerns, monitor for any fluctuations in mental wellbeing and respond accordingly.
* Report to the appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patient’s condition or situation.
* Be an advocate for patients experiencing mental health concerns in an acute setting and promote parity of esteem.
* Contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice, and ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
* Ensure the safe ordering, administration and custody of patients’ medication according to Trust policies and procedures.
* In the absence of senior staff, be responsible for delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, health care assistants and students.
* Assist in coordinating discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team where relevant.
* Responsible for admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations where relevant.
* Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.
* Ensure patients are treated with courtesy, respect individual needs, and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
* Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate.
* Act in emergency situations and be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation; support and direct junior staff accordingly.
* Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
* Ensure readiness for use of special equipment and availability of nursing supplies in conjunction with senior ward nurses.
* Safekeep patients’ valuables and property according to Trust policies.
* Report and document any complaints, incidents or accidents involving self, staff, patients, visitors and complete relevant documentation according to Trust procedure.
* Report and document any broken or damaged equipment according to Trust policy.
* Have detailed knowledge of Manual handling regulations and ensure assessment of patients’ manual handling needs; ensure junior staff and students follow these requirements.
Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Registered Mental Health Nurse with current live NMC registration
* Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
* Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent)
Work Experience
Essential criteria
* Evidence of broad range of mental health nursing experience
* Candidate has undertaken training relevant to the RMN role
* Candidate has experience working in an appropriate clinical setting
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
* Advanced communication skills, verbal and written, including report writing and record keeping
* Basic computer / IT skills with willingness to develop (e.g., IHS, Acis, Email)
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Time management and basic problem solving skills
