Job Description:
Structural Integrity Engineer (FEA) - Submarines
We have an interesting opportunity for two Structural Integrity Engineers to join our new office opening in Cardiff. As a structural integrity engineer, you will be engaged primarily in structural integrity assessments including primary strength, fatigue, fatigue crack growth, and fracture assessments, in accordance with ASME III and R6 defect tolerance assessment code.
You will support a wide range of programmes from in-service support, new build, and future programmes. You will also build and maintain Finite Element Analyses (FEA) models to extract stresses for component justification.
Why Rolls-Royce?
Our Submarines business is expanding, opening a new office in Cardiff, and seeking engineers across multiple disciplines. We support the Royal Navy as the technical authority to the UK Ministry of Defence for naval reactor plants, and are growing our submarine and nuclear sector capabilities.
Join us for an inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in your growth, offers continuous learning, and provides opportunities to advance your career.
What we offer:
Competitive salary, bonus, employee support assistance, and employee discounts. The work is interesting and varied, with opportunities to respond rapidly to challenges, providing vital support to the Submarines enterprise.
Responsibilities:
* Undertake mechanical assessments, including linear and non-linear finite element analyses.
* Use hand calculations, commercial finite element codes (mainly Abaqus), and bespoke analysis tools.
* Develop and substantiate component designs, support through-life management, and submarine enterprise support.
* Develop methodologies for assessing submarine nuclear plant components.
* Communicate assessment results clearly to various audiences within Rolls-Royce, industry partners, and customers.
Requirements:
* Degree in mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or equivalent experience.
* Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects.
* Interest and expertise in structural integrity analysis.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of failure mechanisms and assessment methods.
* Experience with finite element methods (preferably Abaqus).
* Knowledge of safety-critical components and relevant codes (ASME III, R6).
* Membership or working towards chartership in a relevant professional institution.
We are committed to diversity and inclusion. To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines, you need UK nationality and must hold a UK Security Check (SC) clearance, which we will support if needed.
