Commercial Assistant / Trainee Quantity Surveyor role at AmcoGiffen. Sector: Rail & Civil Engineering. Location: Cumbernauld, Scotland. This role is suitable for individuals at various stages of their career, from starting out to those with some experience in commercial or administrative work.
You’ll support experienced Quantity Surveyors across a range of infrastructure projects, gain practical experience, and develop your skills in a collaborative environment. AmcoGiffen supports professional development and can offer sponsorship for formal qualifications or apprenticeships for those looking to build a long-term career in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management.
About The Business
Our Scotland business unit delivers multi-disciplinary civil engineering projects for clients including Local Authorities, Network Rail, environmental bodies, and private developers. Current and ongoing work includes:
* Roads, bridges, tunnels, and underbridges
* Flood alleviation and embankment repairs
* Rail platforms and infrastructure upgrades
We’re actively delivering projects under long-term frameworks such as Civils Asset Management (CAM), Renewals Enhancement Framework (REF), and slab track renewals.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll be involved in a wide range of commercial tasks, including:
* Supporting Quantity Surveyors with day-to-day operations
* Assisting in cost planning, forecasting, and reporting
* Managing subcontractor payments and procurement processes
* Preparing and processing order requests and site instructions
* Compiling final account documentation and completion records
* Handling technical queries and client communications
* Maintaining trackers and preparing weekly reports
* Analysing commercial data for internal reporting
* Building effective working relationships across teams and with external partners
* Learning commercial systems and contributing to process improvements
* Ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and company policies
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking someone who is organized, proactive, and keen to develop within the construction industry. Ideally, you’ll bring:
* Strong communication skills and confidence in working with others
* Solid IT skills, especially in Microsoft Excel
* Attention to detail and a methodical approach to managing data
* A willingness to learn and take on new challenges
* The ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Previous experience in a commercial or administrative role (preferred but not essential)
* A genuine interest in progressing within quantity surveying
