Overview
University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is seeking a Clinical Vascular Scientist to work independently performing, interpreting and reporting a range of highly specialised diagnostic investigations including Doppler blood flow analysis for Vascular Surgery and other specialties within the Trust and its associated sites.

The post holder will participate in research, trials and clinical audit. The role includes training junior staff and assisting with managerial duties directed by the head of department. The post holder will contribute towards departmental commitments for training external staff and will provide scientific, technical and clinical advice and service to other sites served by the department.
Responsibilities include planning own workload, organizing projects and prioritising requests; adapting schedules in response to urgent requests; and discussing highly complex aspects of patient treatment/outcome with medical staff, scientists, nurses and the head of department.
The department operates 7 days a week, with weekend shifts on a rotational basis among team members, and all employees are required to contribute to weekend coverage.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
* Independently perform, by means of a Colour Doppler Ultrasound Unit and other specialised equipment, a comprehensive range of highly specialised diagnostic duplex ultrasound scans, including carotid, upper and lower limb arterial duplex scans and intracranial cerebral blood flow measurements and temporal scans on patients.
* Perform non-imaging investigations such as invasive and non-invasive physiological pressure measurements.
* Undertake intra-operative and immediate post-operative transcranial monitoring, alerting the vascular surgeons of critical adverse events.

Job responsibilities
* Adjust and tailor the scope of the investigation depending on the patient’s symptoms and/or pathology found during the course of the investigation.
* Discuss complex technical issues with medical and other staff, including advising clinicians of any limitations that may affect the accuracy of the investigation and, where appropriate, recommend alternative diagnostic imaging techniques or modalities.
* Clearly communicate the nature of, and reasons for, the investigation to the patient.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and communicate directly with other health professionals, especially vascular surgeons, with information relevant to the patient’s management.
* Understand the potential hazards and bio-effects of Doppler Ultrasound and be aware of national and international safety guidelines.
* Participate in clinical and scientific research, and medical trials.
* Contribute to the training of junior staff including trainees, scientists, technologists and other staff from within the Trust and externally.
* Assist with scheduling patient appointments and adapt work plans in response to urgent requests or extended procedures affecting operating theatre times.
* Be actively involved in developing departmental policies and procedures and implement strategies that impact work inside and outside the department.
