Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and innovative leader to join our team as Ward Matron. The successful candidate will take accountability for leading the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) nursing team, Stroke Clinical nursing specialists, and the thrombolysis nurse service based in A&E. This pivotal role focuses on delivering exceptional quality care, outstanding patient experience and involvement, and operational excellence throughout the stroke pathway. About you: You’re an accomplished senior nurse with a strong track record in hyper Acute Stroke unit nursing leadership. You bring credibility in managing large nursing teams, local and regional stroke pathways, implementing and evaluating evidence based care, and driving service improvements. You’re calm under pressure, collaborative across disciplines, and confident using data to guide decisions and drive outcomes. More than anything you are a kind, expert, collaborative and an aspirational leader.

Main duties of the job

1. Leading the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit team to deliver high-quality, safe and compassionate care.
2. The ward matron will also provide assurance to the Trust that programmes of care for patients on their ward/unit meets agreed standards.
3. Use specialist knowledge and competence to effectively lead their team and produce positive patient outcomes and experiences; providing assurance to the directorate through regular reviews of performance data and improvement programmes.
4. Maintain accountability for their practice and ensure their team is also accountable for their practice and professional development.
5. Oversee the stroke patient pathway at Imperial ensuring seemless flow from arrival in the Emergency department, transfer through imaging/interventional radiology and admission to Hyper Acute Stroke Unit including the ITU and then repatriation to local stroke units.
6. Support the Lead Nurse to ensure that safe staffing levels/skill mix is maintained and put in place measures to ensure this both in and out of hours.
7. Contribute to quality and service improvement plans, including participation in ward accreditation and Pathway to Excellence activities.

Education

Essential criteria

8. NMC
9. Degree Qualified
10. Recognised teaching/assessing qualification.
11. Management certificate or equivalent experience

Desirable criteria

12. Post registration qualification in related specialty
13. MSc or equivalent experience
14. Professional Nurse Advocate qualification.
15. Quality Improvement qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

16. Significant experience at Band 7 managing a relevant clinical setting.
17. Extensive experience within speciality
18. Experience of leading and developing a team, including formal HR processes
19. Knowledge of budget management.
20. Demonstrable commitment to nursing excellence through involvement in Trust wide initiatives/committees.
21. Articulate with advanced written and verbal communication skills.
22. Ability to work effectively under pressure
23. IT Skills (Including proficiency with Microsoft Office Packages and accurate, fast typing skills
24. Capable of working strategically (business planning, service improvements, strategies for infection control)
25. Ability to meet deadlines
26. Ability to undertake surveys or audits, as necessary e.g. audit of clinical incidents

Desirable criteria

27. Experience as a Band 7 Ward Manager.
28. Experience leading a stroke ward/service.
29. Experience with annual stroke accreditation programme
30. Mediation/resolution experience
31. Formal capability management.
