What is our Geomatics placement programme? Our Geomatics team encompasses three key disciplines and service areas: Land Referencing Land Surveying GIS and CAD Our Geomatics placement programme is a 12-month programme designed to give you comprehensive exposure to one of these three service areas which all support the delivery of Utilities & Infrastructure projects in their own distinctive way. Through working on live projects, learning from industry experts and networking opportunities, we will help you to building your technical and professional skills needed for a career and to make the valuable contributions towards your academic fulfilments for your degree. What will you get up to? What does the job involve? As a land referencing placement you will support the wider Land Referencing team in the delivery of a variety of projects across the UK and Republic of Ireland. You will support the production of documents to support a range of projects across a variety of consenting regimes including Development Consent Orders and Compulsory Purchase Orders. You will ideally have a keen eye for detail and be naturally inquisitive in order to undertake tasks such as: Procuring and interpreting property information from sources such as HM Land Registry and Registers of Scotland. Interpreting and processing property information questionnaires Quality control of statutory notices Undertaking mail merges to support large scale mail outs to project stakeholders Site visits to install or deliver notices Engagement with stakeholders such as landowners, occupiers or land agents As a GIS placement you will have the opportunity to support the wider GIS & CAD team in the creation, visualisation and analysis of spatial data on a variety of projects across the UK and Republic of Ireland. You will be involved in creating clear maps and GIS outputs to help our internal teams and our clients to better understand project data and to make more informed decisions. You will ideally have had an introduction to GIS concepts, data structure and creation and have a keen eye for detail to enable you to undertake tasks such as: Creation and management of spatial data Create a wide variety of maps and plans across a broad range of utility and Infrastructure clients and projects Add data to web mapping applications and configuration of applications as directed Create field GIS applications for use by internal and external teams Use and manage a wide variety of external spatial data sets Learn how to use and get best value from a variety of GIS geoprocessing tools A day in the life of a Geomatics placement student involves Assist Geomatics service team(s) to deliver a range of services and advice to internal and external clients in support of Utilities and Infrastructure projects, including producing and presenting drawings, maps and plans, carrying out surveys and setting out works in the field, researching, processing and presenting property ownership data. Assist the team with data management and maintaining client and own databases, ensuring information is processed and stored in accordance with legal, regularity and organisational requirements. Engage with different members of the wider team, as well as internal clients (Surveyors) and other internal and/or external stakeholders remotely and on site to collect data, discuss requirements and operations, present information and provide updates. Initially shadow and latterly move on to working more independently on projects and requests, ensuring client deadlines and objectives are met and taking ownership for own standard of work. Assist the wider Geomatics team with ad hoc tasks, using own growing knowledge and skills to provide appropriate support as required. Maintain good records including meeting notes and comprehensive file updates and records of activities to help provide client updates and ensure accurate billing. Engage in company run CPD and maintain a detailed record of activities to meet academic and/or professional body (e.g., RICS) requirements whilst fulfilling any other requirements set by the university, including writing assignments and attending progress review meetings. Assist business development by suggesting and helping to implement ideas for improvement if any. - Attend company events and socials and embrace DM's values, adopting a positive attitude in the workplace.
