Senior Highways & Traffic Engineer – Bristol
AECOM is seeking an experienced engineer to join the Streets team in Bristol to deliver traffic engineering, Active Travel, and urban realm projects across the South West and beyond. The role focuses on safer, greener, and more inclusive transport networks that have real community impact. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to guide projects through design and delivery.
Responsibilities
* Lead the development of Active Travel and traffic engineering schemes from concept through to detailed design and implementation.
* Manage technical outputs, mentor junior staff, and ensure successful delivery of high-quality, sustainable transport solutions.
* Coordinate the design and delivery of Traffic Engineering, Active Travel, and urban realm schemes, providing regular updates to the Design Lead and Project Manager.
* Support project timelines, risks, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring alignment with objectives, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.
* Prepare and review technical outputs including drawings, reports, and specifications for accuracy, compliance, and constructability.
* Ensure all work meets relevant standards, project briefs, and statutory requirements.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to support integrated project delivery.
* Delegate tasks to graduates and technicians; provide technical guidance and support professional development.
* Champion Health & Safety best practices and ensure CDM compliance throughout the design process.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a confident engineer with a strong background in Active Travel and traffic engineering. You’ll be passionate about delivering high-quality infrastructure that improves mobility, safety, and sustainability.
Qualifications
* Experience in concept, preliminary, and detailed design of Active Travel, local roads and traffic engineering schemes; expertise in walking, cycling, bus priority, and traffic calming.
* Strong knowledge of drainage, junctions, and carriageway improvements.
* Familiarity with design standards such as TSRGD, Manual for Streets, DMRB, and the Traffic Signs Manual.
* Understanding of Health & Safety and CDM regulations.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
Desirable: Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; Chartered or Incorporated status (or working towards it); experience with highways 3D modelling software (e.g., Civil 3D); familiarity with collaborative design workflows and Common Data Environments (CDEs); experience in stakeholder and client management.
