The Lead Systems Instructor role at the Boscombe Down site involves overseeing current and future delivery of systems instruction on ETPS, leading the development of systems test and evaluation training, and collaborating with industry partners to integrate new technologies into ETPS curricula.
The Lead Systems Instructor coordinates and standardises systems instruction, supporting the Head of Training (HoT) and Chief Flying Instructors (CFIs) in initial module development and continuous improvement of systems teaching. The role may include delivering instruction in other areas as directed by the Short Course CFI, in consultation with the HoT.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities
* Lead Systems Instructor for all ETPS Approved Training Organisation (ATO) courses
* Accountable for Continuous Improvement of the delivery of Crewed and un-crewed Aviation System Test and Evaluation Methodology and Training
* Assist CFIs on continuous improvement of their courses, using experience, customer demand and Inval/Exval information
* Manage/lead or assist in general courseware development
* Assist in maintaining standards of instruction and content relevance for all systems modules on ETPS courses, including oversight of guest/industry partners
* Assist the Short Course CFI and the HoT in stakeholder management of key ETPS relationships with the UK and overseas militaries and other industry partners
* Assist the HoT and the ETPS Commanding Officer in managing ETPS and QinetiQ’s relationship with Air and Space Warfare Centre (ASWC) as a key customer/stakeholder
Key Capabilities / Knowledge
* Significant and demonstrable knowledge of Aviation Systems, including some knowledge of the RPAS sector
* Ability to conduct technical oversight of current training material
* Ability to manage Continuous Improvement for systems syllabus across short courses and/or EASA CAT I/II courses
* Ability to participate in training output of student Internal Validation (Inval) and External Validation (Exval) meetings and module improvement activities
* Instigating and supporting course development to improve learning objectives and safety
* Working knowledge of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Military Aviation Authority (MAA) regulations and DSAT processes
* Ambassador for the QinetiQ ATO, QCFO and Flight Test Organisation, with ability to operate stand-alone and deploy to other locations to deliver training or engage with customers
Essential Education, Qualifications and Experience / Training
Graduate Long Course (Cat 1/ Class A) Flight Test Professional (Test Pilot or Flight Test Engineer) OR significant and demonstrable experience of conducting Test and Evaluation of advanced aviation systems
Essential Knowledge and Skills
* First-rate leadership, management and administrative skills
* Minimum of 3 years of experience in a flight test department/squadron/unit on significant aviation systems projects
* Knowledge of flight test techniques and related theory for civilian and military aviation requirements
* Knowledge of modern teaching methods in aviation training
* Business development experience or demonstrable awareness of methodology

Desirable Criteria
* Instructional qualifications from a recognised aviation entity (e.g., Military QHI/QFI/EWI/WI or Civilian TRI/TRE or Flight Test Instructor/Engineer Instructor)
* Extensive knowledge or experience in the RPAS industry
* Medical category to support airborne instruction
* Experience in flight test instruction and novel technologies applicable to military or commercial aviation (e.g., ML/AI)
* Experience operating in a complex commercial environment
* Management or leadership experience within a matrix organisation
