Are you an experienced Urban Designer ready to lead, influence and shape high‑quality places at scale?
We are seeking an accomplished Urban Design Director to join our Edinburgh office, playing a pivotal role in leading complex, high‑profile projects and helping to drive the continued growth of our urban design offer. This is an opportunity for a confident leader to combine design excellence with strategic thinking, client leadership and team development.
The Role
As a Design Director, you will provide leadership across a diverse portfolio of urban design and masterplanning projects, working closely with architects, designers and senior colleagues across the practice. You will take ownership of projects from early visioning through to planning delivery, while also contributing to business development and the strategic direction of the team.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading conceptual urban design, feasibility and masterplanning commissions
* Shaping development briefs and design strategies for residential and mixed‑use schemes
* Acting as a senior point of contact for clients, building and maintaining long‑term relationships
* Overseeing the production of high‑quality drawn and written planning material
* Providing strong leadership, mentoring and line management within the design team
* Supporting business development and contributing to the wider practice strategy
About You
You will be an experienced, commercially aware urban design leader with a strong reputation for delivering quality outcomes. You’ll bring a collaborative mindset, strategic thinking and the confidence to lead both people and projects.
You will demonstrate:
* Significant experience in private practice, consultancy or commercial housebuilding
* A strong track record in visioning and masterplanning for sites of varying scale
* Expertise in residential layout design with a commercially astute approach
* In‑depth knowledge of the Scottish planning system and local authority design guidance
* Excellent leadership, project management and communication skills
* A proactive, detail‑driven and professional approach
A relevant qualification is essential. A working knowledge of CAD software is required, with Vectorworks and/or SketchUp experience advantageous. Previous line management experience is essential for this role.
