Chemotherapy Manager, Garden Suite

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time band 7-unit manager onour chemotherapy outpatient unit on Garden Suite at the Alexandra Hospital. This post is a secondment to cover a 9-monthmaternity post. We are looking for an enthusiastic SACT trained band 6 nursewho wishes to progress in their career and experience managing a friendly and busychemotherapy unit. The successful candidate will be supported by the OncologyMatron and SACT lead nurse consultant.
Main duties of the job
* Ensuring safe staffing across the unit, ensure patient safety with SACT, manage staff sickness and wellbeing.
* Ensuring high standards of IPC protocols and cleaning, completing audits, attending Governance and relevant meetings.
* Working closely with our other unit managers within SCSD division.

Job responsibilities
Job Purpose:
To oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers in a chemotherapyoutpatient setting.
Havecontinuous responsibility for the unit providing visible professionalleadership and line management for a team of nursing and support staff.
Toensure a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effectivemanagement of staffand resources within the oncology /haematology directorate
To demonstrate strong clinical leadership in stressful and challenging situations
Toact as advocate for the designated area and liase with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate all aspects of patient care in the best interests of the patient
Ensurestaffing is in line with Trust policy.
Beresponsible for the safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.
Championa culture of learning and quality improvement in the clinical area.
Tosupervise the professional development of staff providing leadership and expertknowledge and skills in Chemotherapy nursing.
Key Duties:
Ensure high standards of patient care at all times challenging andensuring others challenge practise, in accordance with the NMC ProfessionalCode of Conduct.
In collaboration with senior members of the Divisional teamprovide assurance that the standards set out in the relevant Nursing &Midwifery strategy and direction of Nursing & Midwifery for the Trust aredelivered at unit level.
Ensure local plans support all clinical quality externalaccreditation, for example Care Quality Commission (CQC) essential standards.
Through visible clinical leadership ensure that the delivery ofkind, compassionate and respectful care takes place, and that the unit teamdevelop relationships with patients that involve better listening and decisionmaking; no decision without me
Act as the patients advocate when appropriate, when informeddecisions may lead to choices being made concerning treatment options.
Ensure that the delivery of care in the unit meets the individualneeds of all patients, providing adequate food and drink, basic hygiene needsand considers inclusivity and personalisation.
Ensure that all patient care is assessed, planned, prioritised andhigh quality, both physical and psychological delegating to support staff asrequired. Seek advice and support from other staff as required.
In accordance with individualised patient care, ensure clinicalobservations are taken results recorded and any appropriate actions taken basedon the results.
Ensure the maintenance of professional contemporaneous records atall times, document all actions and interventions in a clear and honest andtimely manner in line with Trust policy.
Deal with concerns raised by patients and visitors in a proactivemanner, review patient feedback results and update the units patientexperience improvement plans, as needed.
Ensure on arrival to the unit patients, relatives and other staffare received in a professional manner and act in a courteous and polite mannerat all times, thereby ensuring good public relations between patients, publicand staff.
Store, check and administer drugs in accordance with the TrustMedicines policy.
Act as a clinical expert within Chemotherapy Nursing providingexpert advice when required.
Demonstrate expert knowledge by being visible and accessible inthe Clinical area and using clinical skills as required
Regularly administer chemotherapy to maintain clinical competencyand skills
Managerial responsibilities
Manage the unit when on duty with overall continuing clinicalresponsibility, and lead a team of staff, in order to carry out delivery ofcare to a complex group of patients.
Ensure nursing practices comply with Trust procedural documents.
To ensure the Trusts risk management policy is appropriately utilisedin the unit.
Manage the delegated budget for the ward/department, working closelywith the Matron, General and Finance managers, working to achieve financialbalance.
Ensure the health and safety of all staff, patients and visitors,reporting any incidents, hazards, or defects and taking responsibility tominimise risk. To implement action plans to ensure improvement if an incidenthas occurred and ensuring adherence to Trust policies and procedures.
To have local open and transparent communication channels that supportthe unit team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold whenthey have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong.
Develop the unit team, ensuring a learning environment, leading byexample and to be aware of the effect of change upon all bands of staff.
Leadimprovement / transformation projects on the unit as indicated by local andnational initiatives.
Inaccordance with Trusts policy formally agree with Matron / Lead ChemotherapyNurse the units workforce requirements, monitor and review of nursingworkforce as indicated, ensuring integration with the local delivery plan, andthe optimal deployment of the nursing workforce.
In linewith the Trusts e-rostering policy deploy staff to ensure safe and appropriatenursing care is given at all times. This includes the approval of ward /department off-duties anticipating problems where they exist and taking local /timely actions as appropriate.
As LineManager, take responsibility for human resource issues including appraisal,personal development, sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance, recruitmentand selection and personal career development delegating as appropriate.
Ensureall complaints both formal and informal are dealt with promptly and courteouslyin accordance with Trust policy. To respond in writing to complaints byinterviewing staff, collating information and writing statements to provideevidence, reviewing practise where appropriate in response.
Activelyparticipate in local and Trust level meetings proactively seeking to improvepatients experience and feeding back relevant information to the Team.
Meetregularly with the Matron to monitor clinical care, finance/resources and HRissues, ensuring clear communication pathways into and out of the department.

Experience
* Significant post registration experience at minimum band 6.
* Significant experience of working within a SACT environment
* Able to demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge of patient group.
* Working knowledge of national policy relating to chemotherapy services.
* Evidence of teaching experience both formal and informal.

* Registered Nurse (Part 1)
* Post Registration Qualification in Oncology/Haematology and or Chemotherapy
* Educated to first degree level
* Recognised NMC teaching and assessing qualification
