Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. You will lead the development and maintenance of electrical engineering standards, provide technical engineering leadership, and support the delivery of safe, reliable, and sustainable assets across water management, flood defence and monitoring sites.
Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain the Agency’s electrical engineering standards, including high‑ and low‑voltage power systems and control systems.
* Draft, publish and review electrical safety rules and guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
* Provide technical expertise and advice across control systems, SCADA/telemetry, and risk‑based electrical maintenance philosophies.
* Lead incident response activities, including night‑shift duty as required.
* Collaborate with Standards, Asset Management and Engineering teams to shape future service delivery and meet net‑zero commitments.
Qualifications & Experience
* Good working knowledge of Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Proficiency in control systems design, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Experience with high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver safe systems of work, risk assessments, and method statements.
* Competence in testing, isolation and proving of high and low voltage electrical systems.
* Strong risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance, including Failure Mode Effects Analysis and reliability systems.
* Experience drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and Chartered Engineer registration with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration within 12 months.
* UK driving licence.
Additional Information
This is a hybrid role; a base location near your home will be allocated. Some travel, including overnight stays, may be required. An incident‑management objective will be included in your development plan, and appropriate training will be provided.
