Prison officer – HMP Stocken

HMP Stocken, 2 Stocken Hall Rd, Stretton, Oakham LE15 7RD

Starting salary: £37,875 (for a 39 hour week inc 20% unsocial).

Responsibilities and assessment

Eligibility to become a prison officer

* Be at least 18 years old at the commencement of employment
* Meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements
* Pass a medical and fitness assessment
* Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes
* Meet a suitable standard of hearing (for safety reasons)
* Tattoos may be permitted if not offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons
* For safety, a suitable standard of hearing without the use of hearing aids
* To work in a high security prison (category A), you must have been a UK resident for the last 3 years


How to apply and progression

Step-by-step process during recruitment:

* Complete the initial application form
* Stage 1 online test to assess basic judgement and numerical skills
* Stage 2 online tests (task-based assessment) if you pass Stage 1
* Online Assessment Centre (OAC) if you pass the online tests
* Medical and fitness tests, including eyesight, hearing, and basic health screening, if allocated to a vacancy


Pay and working pattern

The initial training is 37 hours per week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours per week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours:

* 37 hours a week = £35,746 per year
* 39 hours a week = £37,875 per year
* 41 hours a week = £40,003 per year

All salary figures quoted include any additional allowances. The standard working week is 39 hours per week.

Job offers and merit vacancy

This is a merit vacancy. If you are successful at the online assessment centre, you will be placed on a merit list based on your score. Job offers will be made to those with the highest scores first when positions become available. You may stay on the merit list for 12 months; after this, you’ll need to reapply.


Operational roles

Our Online Assessment Centre (OAC) will also determine suitability for appointment as an Operational Support Grade (OSG). If you are unsuccessful as a prison officer, we may offer you an alternative role as an OSG. Operational support grade - Ministry of Justice.
