GSL Education are seeking an empathetic and resilient ASD Teaching Assistant to join a nurturing primary school in Ashington. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact on the educational and emotional development of children with additional needs.
About the Role
As an ASD Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers and the SENCo to provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with ASD. Your focus will be to foster an inclusive, structured, and emotionally secure learning environment, enabling pupils to access the curriculum and thrive both academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities of ASD TA:
* Deliver tailored support to children with ASD, adapting learning tasks and materials as required.
* Establish strong, trusting relationships with pupils, using appropriate communication techniques and positive reinforcement.
* Assist with social integration, emotional regulation, and behavioural support strategies.
* Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and external professionals to implement individual support plans (EHCPs/IEPs).
* Monitor pupil progress, provide feedback, and contribute to review meetings.
* Support with sensory needs and help create a low-arousal, autism-friendly classroom setting.
* Maintain a safe and respectful environment, promoting dignity and independence at all times.
Requirements for the role of ASD Teaching Assistant (TA):
* Knowledge of ASD-specific strategies such as PECS, TEACCH, or sensory integration (desirable).
* Experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a school or specialist setting (essential).
* A calm, patient, and adaptable approach, with a genuine desire to support SEND pupils.
* Understanding of the primary curriculum and how to modify tasks for individual learners.
* Ability to implement and follow behaviour management strategies and communication tools (e.g., PECS, Makaton, visual timetables).
* Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered to the Update Service (or willingness to apply through GSL Education).
* CACHE Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent qualification (desirable but not essential).
