Job description
Why this role matters
This role is central to helping Exeter City Council meet its legal duties and build a culture where health, safety, and wellbeing are part of everyday thinking. You’ll be supporting services across the council to stay compliant, confident, and proactive—making a real difference to how people work and feel.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll provide expert advice and hands-on support across a wide range of health and safety areas—from inspections and audits to training and incident investigations. You’ll help shape policies, coach staff on using our compliance systems (like AssessNET), and work with teams to embed good practice. You’ll also get involved in specialist areas like asbestos advice, workplace sampling, and supporting our Business Regulation Team when needed.
Who we’re looking for
A qualified health and safety professional (NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent) with strong technical knowledge and excellent communication skills. You’ll be confident working independently and collaboratively, able to tailor advice to different audiences, and comfortable presenting information clearly. You’ll also be flexible, proactive, and ready to work across a diverse range of services—sometimes at short notice or in challenging environments.
Why join us
We’re a forward-thinking council with a strong focus on people, safety, and innovation. You’ll be part of a supportive HR & OD team that values fresh ideas, professional development, and making a real impact. If you’re looking for a role where you can grow, influence, and help shape the future of workplace safety—this is it.
