We have an exciting opportunity here at Smiths Detection for an experienced Field Scientist to join our Science & Technology Projects team on a 12-month FTC. This field-based role will have a mixture of being site-based at our Hemel Hempstead Production site, but also visiting 3rd party sites to gather and analyze essential data as and when required. Travel could be up to 50%.
Requirements:
1. PhD in Physics or Chemistry
2. Working knowledge in Trace Detection within Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, or high yield Explosives
3. Analytical Instrument Design knowledge, ideally ion mobility spectrometry
This is a fantastic opportunity to join an R&D team where you will play an integral part in providing scientific expertise and support focusing on the current/future state of our flagship trace detection product that is pivotal in detecting harmful chemical, explosives, and narcotics. You will also be instrumental in the planning and execution of experiments, analysis of data, and instrument/experimental design. Educated to a PhD level, you must have proven 'hands-on' experience in the lab.
You will work in close collaboration with the scientific community within Smiths Detection and with engineering and product manufacturing functions as and when required, liaising with Project Management and other business functions as necessary. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Analysis of Data (onsite and offsite)
2. Formulation and presentation of conclusions
3. Provide scientific input to the design, build, and testing of experimental equipment
4. Plan and conduct original research for the purposes of design and performance enhancement
5. Critically appraise experimental data and theory and provide guidance based on interpretation of data
6. Identify gaps and propose additional work
7. Contribute to project planning and review activities
8. Support scientific aspects of products throughout their lifecycle
9. Manage own time and work with a high degree of autonomy
10. May lead work of a technician
11. Provide support to off-site trials and tests
12. Work in accordance with local company policies and procedures
13. Provide hands-on support and up-to-date technical advice to Technical Authorities, Programme and Product Managers, at proposal, design specification, development, testing, and production stages and assist in bid preparation
