Consultant in General Adult Community Psychiatry
Job Overview
CNWL are currently looking for a full‑time permanent Consultant Psychiatrist to provide input to a high‑functioning Community Mental Health Team as part of a multi‑disciplinary service (North Kensington Mental Health Hub – CMHH).
The North K&C Community Mental Health Hub (NK&C CMHH) is based at Hathaway House. The team is multi‑disciplinary and well‑resourced. It consists of two PCNs (Neohealth PCN and Westhill/Inclusive PCN) with a caseload of around 600‑700 patients (300‑350 per PCN). The hub receives on average 25‑30 new referrals per week and transfers 100‑120 patients back to primary care per month.
Main Duties
* Provide clinical leadership to ensure delivery of high‑quality care in the North Kensington & Chelsea community mental health team.
* Supervise, teach and train junior medical staff, medical students, specialist nurses and other multidisciplinary team staff.
* Participate actively in departmental and Trust matters concerning care quality and service evaluation projects.
* Support and lead quality improvement, research and service development activities.
* Provide joint leadership with the manager for team performance, ensuring best practice and Trust targets are met.
* Deliver overall clinical leadership for the North K&C Community Mental Health Hub’s multidisciplinary team and direct clinical assessments and consultations for the Westhill/Inclusive PCN.
Management Responsibilities
* Member of the Medical Staff Committee of CNWL.
* Participate in committees and project teams relating to service development in discussion with the Borough and Clinical Directors.
Teaching Responsibilities
* Active role in the postgraduate teaching programme, including a local academic meeting on Wednesday lunchtime (Journal Club, case presentations).
* Supervise medical students attending ward rounds and community MDT meetings; support work‑experience students where applicable.
* Supervise junior doctors in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists’ standards.
Person Specification
Educational and Professional Qualifications (Essential)
* Primary Medical Degree.
* Full GMC Registration.
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register (or CCT expected within 6 months).
* Section 12 MHA Approved.
* AC approval.
Desirable Criteria (Educational)
* MRCPsych (or equivalent).
* Higher degree (MSc, LLM, MD or PhD).
* Management and leadership training or qualification.
* Extensive experience at doctoral level.
Essential Core Skills
* Experience of assessment and treatment of mental disorders in an acute psychiatric setting.
* Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
* Proficient in risk assessment and management.
* Experience of using the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act in an inpatient setting.
* Evidence of completed clinical audit projects.
* Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate trainee teaching.
Desirable Core Skills
* Experience of service development or business planning.
* Completed research projects; publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
* High level knowledge of national developments to improve efficiency and quality of services.
* Experience teaching non‑medical staff/carers.
