Job overview

We are seeking a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) to commence on Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) within in the Division of Medicine.

Main duties of the job

Function as a team member of the Multidisciplinary Team by assisting the Registered Nurse in the delivery of effective high quality patient care. All work undertaken by the post holder will be under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key results from the job holder

Planning and Organisational Duties

1. Participate in meetings and handover to discuss patients progress and care.
2. Monitor and maintain stock level on ward / department.
3. Undertake errand duties which include;
4. Transporting specimens.
5. Collecting instruments / drugs.
6. Collecting case notes as required.
7. Assist in the preparation of patient case notes as required.

Communications and Key Working Relationships

8. To communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and high quality care is provided to all patients
9. Maintain effective working relationships with ward colleagues particularly those highlighted within the organisational chart above.

Responsibility for Finance

10. To be aware of the need for cost effective use of resources when delivering the service.
11. Liaise with Estates and Works Departments in respect of all maintenance issues.
12. Check the ward has sufficient stock to meet the patient and staff needs.
13. Complete daily checking of equipment and returning of equipment to loan store.

Responsibility for Human Resources

14. Adhere to Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
15. Ensure compliance with Mandatory training requirements in accordance with Trust Policy.

Responsibility for Health & Safety

Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

Responsibility for Teaching

16. Attend mandatory training as directed by Trust.

Work Circumstances & on-call

17. Shifts of 6 or 12 hours to include nights and weekends. Rosters are planned and released six weeks in advance.
