Job Overview

Key Responsibilities
The Departmental Senior Manager role includes:
* Ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, company policies and procedures and HMPPS standards.
* Overseeing the delivery of services including the Care and Separation Unit, Safer Custody and Violence Reduction, Equality & Diversity, Residential Units, Use of Force, Transitional Support Unit, Assisted Living Unit and Faith Services.
* Line managing Prison Custody Managers and performing duties of Duty Director and Chair of Adjudications.
* Supporting the Head of Functions, Deputy Director and Director in developing and delivering strategic priorities and ensuring prisoner care meets the highest standards.
* Leading risk management within the function, managing complex operational incidents and participating in incident management.
* Representing the prison in the wider community and developing stakeholder networks.
* Developing policies and procedures for effective prison operation and carrying out on‑call duties, including evenings and weekends.
* Contributing to performance measures, contract outcomes and locally agreed targets, including KPIs and CDIs.
* Maintaining operational and administrative duties, including data collection and maintenance, in accordance with prison policies and procedures.
* Supporting people metrics such as turnover, attendance, compliance training, performance reviews, health and safety and employee engagement.
Person Specification
Experience and skills required:
* Previous relevant experience in a custodial or secure environment.
* Managerial experience leading a team of 5 to 15 staff members.
* Basic to intermediate IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and central data system updates.
Preferred qualifications and experience:
* Operational experience in prisons.
* Technical knowledge of prison legislation, policies, standards, inspection and audit processes.
* Understanding of the wider criminal justice system.
* Silver Command training.
* Incident and hostage management training.
* Adjudication training.
* Qualifications or experience equivalent to Level 3 or above (e.g., A levels, Advanced Apprenticeships, International Baccalaureate diplomas, Level 3 NVQ accreditations).
