An opportunity has arisen to join the Breast Imaging Team at Northampton General Hospital. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with a passion for providing the best care to our patients to join the breast imaging team as a Radiology Department Assistant (RDA).
The role will primarily involve working with clinicians in the one‑stop symptomatic breast clinics, supporting patients, assisting with interventional procedures, and completing appropriate documentation and IT processes. It will currently be worked over Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings, with potential changes in future core working hours. The successful candidate will also be responsible for housekeeping of clinical rooms, stock provision, maintaining a clean environment, and ensuring efficient delivery of planned workload.
Key Responsibilities
* Work alongside clinicians in symptomatic breast clinics and support patients during interventional procedures.
* Assist with basic administration duties, including use of radiology computer systems.
* Ensure the environment within the Breast Screening Unit is clean, tidy and ready for use, with stock and linen stocked.
* Assist with clinical stock deliveries, rotation of stock, and maintain stock records.
* Prepare and arrange patient information, act on clinician instructions for further appointments, and liaise with staff to cover lists.
* Maintain clean and tidy work areas and waiting rooms; participate in regular cleaning rotas.
* Ensure safe transportation and timely delivery of specimens to laboratories, adhering to protocol.
* Demonstrate high levels of patient care, explaining procedures and providing compassionate care.
* Support the Quality Assurance Programme and maintain equipment through routine maintenance and cleaning.
* Attend mandatory training and complete the Trust's appraisal programme.
* Adhere to health and safety legislation, fire procedures, and use of PPE.
* Answer telephone queries, assist with clerical duties, and post‑process images to PACS.
* Assist with student training and new staff mentoring.
* Report clinical and non‑clinical incidents through correct departmental procedures.
* Contribute to department operations, including accuracy of patient/examination details, and support training of new staff.
Additional Responsibilities and Operations
* Carry out duties as assigned, involving patient care and welfare.
* Assist patients before, during and after examinations, including basic explanations of procedures.
* Prioritise ad‑hoc workload, liaise with staff to ensure lists are covered and patients are not delayed.
* Take responsibility for safe transportation and timely delivery of specimens and samples.
* Maintain stock records, put stores/supplies away in an organised manner, rotate stock in storerooms.
* Undertake routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
* Assist with the Quality Assurance Programme.
* Adhere to Local Rules, Ionising Radiation Regulations and Health & Safety procedures.
* Take reasonable care for health and safety of self, staff, patients and visitors.
* Contribute ideas and suggestions, attend staff/team meetings, keep updated with new developments and maintain competencies.
* Participate in the Trust's Appraisal programme and maintain mandatory training evidence.
Service and Patient Population
The service supports a breast screening population of approximately 60,000 women in Central and West Northamptonshire, and provides a symptomatic service for the county through a static unit with two mammography units (Pristina) and two ultrasound rooms (GE), plus two mobile screening units with Visbion remote image transfer. Assessment and symptomatic appointments are offered at the Forrest Centre, Northampton General Hospital.
