Paediatric Critical Care Outreach Nurse

This is an exciting opportunity to join the established Paediatric Critical Care Outreach Team (PCCOT) at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic paediatric nurse with excellent clinical, communication, and decision‑making skills. You will be able to manage competing priorities, make high‑level decisions, and work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to lead and deliver expert care for critically ill children.

As a Paediatric Critical Care Outreach Nurse, you will use advanced clinical assessment and decision‑making skills to support the care of acutely unwell children across the hospital. You will act as a professional role model, supporting, educating, and developing nursing and junior medical staff in paediatric acute and high‑dependency care.

This role offers experienced senior nurses the opportunity to focus on clinical leadership, care delivery, and education for higher‑acuity patients. The PCCOT leads clinical management pathways and promotes high standards of holistic, evidence‑based care across all clinical areas. Successful applicants will be expected to work autonomously throughout the hospital, leading, managing, and supervising patient assessment and care delivery.

Main duties of the job

Applicants are required to be RSCN or RN‑Part 15 (Child Branch) and have a post‑registration qualification in a related acute paediatric field. You will have excellent communication skills, proven acute paediatric clinical skills together with organisational, leadership and management expertise.

Previous experience as an Outreach Nurse is desirable.

Training & Qualifications

  • RSCN or Registered Nurse (Child)
  • Educated & completion of Degree
  • Masters' qualification or above, or evidence of successful completion of master's level module
  • Current PILS / PLS Certification
  • EPLS / APLS – successful completion – Current certification
  • Physical Assessment and Clinical Reasoning – Child (PACR‑Child) Module / Skills or equivalent Degree or master's Level
  • Pathophysiology and diagnostic reasoning for advanced practice (PADRAP) – Module / Skills or equivalent – Degree or master's Level
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Teaching qualification or evidence of clinical teaching experience
  • Non Medical Prescribing Qualification

Knowledge & Experience

  • Extensive experience of working within a Paediatric Critical Care Outreach Team
  • Extensive post registration experience in paediatric critical care / high dependency nursing
  • Proven clinical / organisational / managerial skills
  • Proven experience of working within a hospital based paediatric multidisciplinary team
  • Sound understanding of acute clinical ward‑based areas of practice
  • Understanding of clinical governance framework within the Trust
  • Evidence of leadership skills and abilities and involvement in change management.
  • Experience of participation in research and audit studies within the last 3yrs
  • Knowledge and skills in paediatric burns care
  • Knowledge and skills in paediatric trauma care

  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication and assertion skills
  • Remains calm in stressful situations
  • Good time management
  • Ability to work within a multi‑disciplinary Team
  • Ability to work independently, autonomously, without close supervision
  • Able to prioritise workload without close supervision
  • Ability to work to a high level of Accuracy
  • Evidence of competency and confidence in undertaking acute/ high‑dependency clinical skills
  • Competency in paediatric venepuncture and cannulation skills
  • Competency in delivering medications via Patient Group Directive (PGD)
  • Able to practice as an autonomous practitioner
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own work
  • Effective communication skills able to communicate complex organisational and clinical information to medical and nursing colleagues
  • Computer literate i.e., word, power‑point, publisher and excel spreadsheets
  • CXR interpretations skills

£39,959 to £48,117 a year per annum, pro rata for part time roles
