Trust StR Higher Doctor in Immunology/Allergy

Clinical Fellow/StR Higher in Immunology

Introduction

Clinical immunologists play a leading role in investigating and managing patients with immunodeficiency and allergy, collaborating with organ-based specialists to care for patients with autoimmune diseases and vasculitis. They oversee diagnostic laboratories that support diagnosis and monitoring of various immunological conditions. A consultant immunologist performs duties including clinical liaison, result interpretation, quality assurance, and assay development. Immunologists also engage in research, including clinical trials, and contribute to medical education.

Peninsula Clinical Immunology and Allergy Service

Based at Eden unit, Derriford Hospital, the service offers specialist immunodeficiency and allergy services for the South West Peninsula (population 1.8 million). It is one of four UK services accredited for both immunodeficiency (QPIDS) and allergy (IQAS). The team includes three consultant immunologists, two specialty registrars, a nurse consultant, five nurses, a unit administrator, two medical secretaries, and two receptionists. Two new posts are in recruitment: this immunology clinical fellow post and a data manager position.

Laboratory Immunology

The diagnostic immunology lab at Derriford Hospital provides comprehensive testing for autoimmune disease, allergy, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, and hematological diagnoses. A Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics service supports stem cell and renal transplants. The lab holds full UKAS and EFI accreditation.

Trust Specialty Registrar Post

The post offers clinical immunology experience through outpatient clinics, day case management, and combined clinics with paediatrics and respiratory medicine. Opportunities include departmental seminars, journal clubs, and national training days.

Educational and Teaching Responsibilities

The department actively teaches medical students and the post holder is expected to contribute to teaching and development activities. Facilities include an extensive library and modern postgraduate centre with regular meetings and sessions.

Research and Clinical Trials

The team participates in large multi-centre trials, including Covid-19 vaccine studies, and smaller disease-specific studies. The post holder will have opportunities to engage in research projects.

Audit and Quality Improvement

The department conducts ongoing audits; the post holder will lead and contribute to audit and quality improvement initiatives, with opportunities to present findings at various conferences.
