Paediatric Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist - Band 7 advert

This role incorporates offering advice and practical support to staff on the management of tissue viability issues. The provision of specialist clinical advice for individual patients includes referral management, telephone triage, remote assessment & planning, face‑to‑face complex assessment & recommendations. Other tasks involve asset management, audit and innovation.

You will be recognised as the acknowledged expert in the management of children/young people at risk or with tissue viability problems and will provide leadership and direction to staff within Specialist Nursing Services whilst liaising with the Trust Tissue Viability team.

You will hold a caseload of children and young people (CYP) that require support with wound care and tissue viability management and with delivering other clinical interventions required within the community setting.

You will work autonomously to provide advanced highly specialised professional advice to colleagues to enhance clinical practice and ensure high standards of tissue viability care.

Full time/part time/flexible hours of working will be considered at interview.

Main duties of the job

* Provide support and advice for staff involved in delivering wound care and preventative interventions within Paediatric Specialist Services; disseminate knowledge and skills through training sessions, e‑learning, face‑to‑face training, and 1‑to‑1 coaching.
* Triage and manage tissue viability referrals coming into the CCN and Palliative Care service, giving telephone advice where appropriate and agreeing with clinical coordinators on referrals’ urgency.
* Provide face‑to‑face and remote specialist advice to nursing teams, examining the quality of wound care delivered in terms of assessment, prevention and treatment through home visits and the clinic model.
* Hold a caseload of CYP that require support with wound care and tissue viability management within Paediatric Specialist Services.
* Ensure all CYP on the Tissue Viability caseload have an up‑to‑date clinical assessment and review of care plans in line with local policies/SOP and clinical need.
* Maintain clinical competencies for other nursing interventions including clinical assessments, administration of injections, medications, management of enteral feeding devices, and Central Venous Line (CVL).


Job responsibilities

* Develop and deliver educational programmes for Birmingham Community Healthcare to support the Children and Families and staff within paediatric specialist nursing services on tissue viability related issues in a variety of formats, including e‑learning and competency‑based assessments.
* Promote the achievement of competencies in nurses involved in wound care & prevention, to facilitate safe and appropriate care.
* Act as a role model to nursing staff in all aspects of wound care.
* Provide clinical support and supervision to specialist nursing colleagues and access regular supervision from the specialist tissue viability team.
* Support Trust management in Tissue Viability‑related issues, attending meetings, participating in initiatives and providing a specialist voice and opinion.
* Actively support innovations and improvements in practice related to Tissue Viability.
* Establish and maintain professional networking relationships with relevant personnel, other professional agencies and organisations.
* Work in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.
* Communicate highly sensitive, condition‑related information to patients and relatives with empathy and reassurance.
* Assist with the production of specialist protocols, guidelines, standards & procedures for Tissue Viability related issues and review and update them in line with relevant research.
* Develop and empower all members of the team to perform to high standards and develop skills and confidence.
* Capture and share best practice with staff to deliver safe, high‑quality care through regular engagement with the Trusts Tissue Viability Team.
* Assist in the pressure ulcer prevention agenda and National Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUINS).


Qualifications / training

* Degree level qualification or equivalent.
* First‑Level Registered Nurse in Adult or Children’s Nursing.
* Postgraduate study at degree level or equivalent.
* A willingness to work towards gaining extensive clinical knowledge in pressure ulcer and wound care management by attending tissue viability courses, study days and relevant training within the role.
* Teaching and assessing courses experience.
* Non‑Medical Independent Prescriber/Nurse Prescriber qualification or willingness to work towards one.


Experience

* Extensive children’s nursing community experience.
* Significant Tissue Viability/wound care role‑related experience.
* Involvement in clinical 'best practice' initiatives.
* Experience of leading people and/or projects, influencing others and delivering results.
* Presentations, training and coaching experience.


Skills/knowledge

* Knowledge of national guidelines, best practice documents, quality improvement programmes and methodology.
* Knowledge and ability to undertake clinical audit and the setting of standards.
* Willingness to learn and embed Tissue Viability procedures, diagnostics and equipment.
* Good understanding of safeguarding practices.
* Demonstrated experience and knowledge in supporting families and staff through safeguarding processes.
* Up‑to‑date, evidence‑based clinical practice knowledge.
* Personal responsibility for health and safety.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent analytical skills.
* Ability to work effectively across organisation and professional boundaries.
* Ability to influence, engage and inspire staff.
* Prioritisation of work and meeting deadlines.
* Use of initiative appropriately.
* Managing complex projects.

* Hold a full, valid UK driving licence with access to a vehicle for work purposes, unless agreed under the Equality Act for reasonable adjustments.
