This is a unique and exciting role to join a dynamic, established private family care team (not a care agency). The role is working with a ten year old girl who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and complex additional needs. The family have a very positive outlook on life and want to help their daughter achieve her maximum potential in life. She is a very happy girl who can communicate through smiles, noises and touch. The child is full of life with a huge personality and enjoys many activities including walks in her wheelchair, music therapy, playing with switch adapted toys, swimming/hydrotherapy, sensory room trips, trying new things on holiday and various other activities. The family are fully driven to include her in everything they do together with a determination to find a way around obstacles to allow her to learn new skills and take part in new experiences.
Experience
Experience in a similar childcare/medical position is preferred but absolutely not essential. Most importantly, the family are looking to recruit the right person/people to fit into their family life and who want to help make a difference to a persons life. Full training in all areas will be provided. This position could suit someone looking for permanent part time hours, someone looking for a second job, someone starting out in their career, someone looking for a job while at college/university, someone looking for a change in career, someone looking to move into semi-retirement or someone who has experience having cared for a loved one. Please do not be put off by the complicated level of care if you have no experience in a similar role as full training and support will be provided until you feel comfortable and are competent in the position.

The role
The post offers the opportunity to develop your skills and undertake personal development in the care of a child with additional complex needs. We are looking for a caring, fun, exciting individual who wants to help make a difference in a young girl's life.Day time shifts will involve supporting the child, keeping her comfortable and sometimes assisting the family on days out. The evening shifts require you to support the child in her bed time routine and awake night shifts require you to be awake from 10pm until 9:15am while supporting the child through the night leading in to her morning care routine ready for school. Night shift can be unpredictable as the child can sleep all night and is sometimes unsettled or very unsettled in periods of illness but can be a fairly relaxed shift on a good night. Full training is provided and it includes all aspects of the following care:
* Pump feeding via Jejunostomy and Gastrostomy drainage
* Suctioning due to Bulbar Palsy
* Cortical vision impairment
* Seizure management due to epilepsy
* Administering medication via jejunostomy
* Daily medication and care record keeping
* All aspects of personal care and hygiene
* Keeping up to date with care reports and policies
* Assisting in maintaining a clean, tidy working environment
* Chest physio routine
* Postural management
* Stretching programme and opportunities to take part in physio sessions at home
* Setting up formula feed
* Use of hoist, standing frame and other disability equipment
Work Environment
The child is part of a fun, proactive, energetic and sporty family and has two younger sisters who love to interact with her. The family live in a fully wheelchair accessible property with all moving and handling equipment in place including a dedicated carers room facility. The family are in the process of building a custom family home to suit the girls needs even further while futureproofing a better working environment for everyone involved in her life.
The primary place of work is within the family home, however role will require you to assist the family when the child is in hospital or on holiday. The family usually take a care team of three or four for a one week holiday. Hours on holiday are paid at normal rate but it also includes all flights, accommodation, transport, paid travel time, daily meal allowance paid in advance, a small daily working away bonus and activities paid for when on shift on holiday. In the past this has included trips to Italy, Disneyland in France, Denmark, Holland, Turkey and UK resorts. It's an exciting opportunity to work and see the world occasionally The family want her to see the world.
Requirements
* Driving licence with access to a vehicle due to the location of the family home
* Fun, caring and compassionate personality
* 'Can do, never say never' attitude
* A willingness to take on all aspects of personal care
* Non smoker due to the child's weak lungs and the work location being a non smoking family home
* Female only position due to the level of personal care required
* Considerate while working within a family home and respecting the wishes of the family
* Patience and remaining calm under pressure
* A willingness to learn
* The successful candidate is subject to PVG scheme and satisfactory references
* Hold a valid passport and have no restrictions on being able to travel abroad
* The flexibility to take on extra shifts in others absence and when care increases in school holidays
* Confidence to talk, read books and sing to a non verbal child
* Confident you will be able to prepare for an awake nightshift
* No criminal convictions
* Good timekeeping
Rate of pay
£14.50 per hour during any day shift hours (9am-10pm)
£16 per hour during any awake night shift (10pm-9am)
Available hours
We have a four week rolling rota with the current staff and the current available shifts we are specifically recruiting for are below. We would still like to hear from you if all or some of these hours don't suit as we are potentially open to various other availability you have to fit into our rolling rota if it suits both parties. Permanent available shifts below are not limited to one person:
* 3-4 Tuesday Night shifts per month 10pm-9:15am
* Every second Friday night shift 10pm-9am
* Every second Thursday/Friday or Saturday afternoon/evening 4pm-8pm (opposite weekend from Friday night shift)
* Increased hours during busy family periods
* Additional day hours during school holidays (varied hours)
* Available hours during times of other staff holidays/sickness every month (varied hours)
Permanent hours per week depending on your availability (more potentially available)
